Why is he a Black Tabby?

Why is Tech Cat 2 a Black Tabby when he is also orange and white?  Underneath his beautiful top coat there is alot of orange, but we can really only see it when we look at the roots of his hair.

Your kitty is brown (genetically black) tabby with white. There is no orange color in cats, I assume you are referring to either, red, cream, golden, cinnamon etc? I can't see any red in this cat, and torties (black&red) males are quite rare so it would be unlikely for him to be a tortie tabby (I'd need to see a pic of his back). The color shades of brown tabbies vary a lot from 'grayish' to very warm 'reddish' tones. There's clearly white in his back paws, the chin may be just pale because of his pattern.

Here is a picture of his back as well as one where his chin can be seen.  Yes, his chin is as pale as the tips of his back paws.  I'm not sure what shade his undercoat would be.  Maybe golden or cinnamon?  And I assume that Tabby referrs to his markings like the < > on either side of his face and the M pattern on his head?  His personality is pretty bold, and he's just over a year old.  He tends to like to bite a little bit.  Sometimes he just nips us, but when he gets really active and excited he will bite hard.

Very unlikely that he'd be a golden tabby. It's a rare color among domestic shorthairs and to me he looks like a regular brown tabby. Definitely not cinnamon because I can clearly see that he's black (you can't have black and cinnamon in one cat at the same time).

I could see him a Brown Tabby.  Because I noticed that when he was spayed and neutered we had his record/ reciept and his breed was shown as a black tabby.  Therefore, I was very surprised to see this because he has other different colors too.

Goodness, he's strikingly beautiful.  Sorry, I know nothing about cat colors...I just stop in the Breeder's Corner sometimes to look at pictures.  smile.gif

Thank you.  Yes we love his shades.  So many and yet, very neutral tones.

Black and brown tabby are the same thing. Brown tabbies are genetically black, that's why they are sometimes called black tabbies (depends from the registry as well).

Thank you so much.  Does genetically black mean that one his parents was black?  Don't know what the registry is.bigeyes.gif

He's black because one or both parents were black (solid or tabbies).

With registry I mean for example FIFé, TICA, CFA, associations that register pedigreed cats. Most of them that have origins in the US call the color a brown tabby, but in Europe it's often known as a black tabby, some patterns may have different names too, like US 'classic tabby' is 'blotched tabby' in some parts of Europe, but it's the same pattern.

I have to agree with NothernGlow...brown tabby and white.  I was a persian breeder in the 80's and although I have been out of it for a while, I still remember my colors. Now I have a couple of exotic shorthairs inside and a large colony of ferals outside.  A brown tabby has the black stripes (or bullseyes) with the offsetting color being brownish.  I have several of them in my feral group.  The regular black tabby's offsetting color is grey.  I also have some gorgeous blue tabbies with spotted white tummies.....a cross between a brown tabby and white male and a solid blue (bluish grey) female.  Their stripes are very dark blue with lighter blue offsetting color.  I have never seen anything like them.

Interesting info about the brown tabbies being genetically black.  This means that my blue tabbies are the dilute version, being genetically blue.

He has the other colours because he's a tabby, but look at the colour of the tip of his tail - it's black.  Pale chins and throats are normal in tabby cats, and they vary in colour from pretty cold to very warm, but tail tip is the give-away.  Although the photos don't show them he probably has black paws (underneath) as well, except for the the white toes.  Really he's tabby & white.

Genetically black means that if you took away the tabby colour he would be a black cat.  All cats have genes for tabby patterns, and you can often see ghost tabby patterns on black kittens and black cats that are out and about a lot and have faded a bit, or sometimes on old black cats.

His paws are brown and black with a couple of small white toes.  However, the pads underneath his paws and the fur surrounding them are a very nice shade of black.  Underneath his top coat, he is all golden like his tummy.  But I'd never guess that by just looking at him.

That's exactly how I expect brown / black tabby paws to be - marked on top, but the pads are black and so is the fur round them.  The pads and tail tip are the best places to check what colour a cat really is.
