Another peeing problem!

Hi everyone, I've read through the sticky and other threads regarding this issue, but I'd like to see if anybody else has a similar type of problem or any new/fresh ideas!

I've had Betsey from 6 weeks old (which I now know was way too soon, yet the previous owner said she was 'ready' to leave her mother...) and luckily, she was already litter-trained. I had no problems whatsoever, even from such a young age- she always went in her box. About 2 months ago (she's just over 6 months old now) we noticed a spot under a table in a corner that was saturated and smelt really bad of pee- but we'd never seen her go there, and she hadn't had any other problems. At first, I assumed it was a tom who got in sneakily when the back door was opened and sprayed, or it was an odour left from our previous cat who unfortunately passed away before we got Betsey. In order to clean up and stop the smell, I bought some Urine-Off, and thought it would work; however, when the plastic was laid down for 24 hours after spraying it, I caught Betsey peeing on the plastic bags.

I kept spraying the Urine-Off hoping it would deter her and the odour would go away; eventually I resorted to putting up a makeshift barrier against the area so she couldn't get in. This worked for a while, but she soon figured out a way to jump over and although the carpet didn't feel wet, the smell was still distinct. Yesterday, we took the barrier down because there was no point if she had worked out to get over it! and bought 2 plastic mats to put on top of the carpet. Then this morning, I woke up to a puddle of pee on the plastic mats.

It seems she might do this at night or when nobody else is in the house, as I only ever caught her doing it the one time on top of the plastic bags. She goes outside now and knows to use the toilet out there, and has never pooped outside of the box and regularly uses the box. Her box is scooped every day and kept really clean, and she has been to the vets recently and there was no sign of a UTI. She's also the only animal in the house. At the moment, we've tried to put a chest of drawers over the spot where she pees, but I'm concerned she can still smell the scent or will find a way to still go there! After reading the previous threads, I've put down a teabag soaked in Olbas oil to see if that will deter her, but it's causing a lot of stress on household members and I'm becoming concerned that I won't be able to break this habit : (

I've had some cats that were drawn like magnets to plastic laying on the floor. There is something about plastic that makes some cats want to pee on top of it. I discovered this when I bought some plastic to use as a drop cloth when I was painting one time. Someone kept peeing on it every time I left it over night. Thinking it was just this type of plastic, I stopped using it, but it happened again when my husband left some plastic bags on the floor. I don't have an explanation for it.

I suspect that the Urine Off didn't really get the smell out of your carpet. I tried it one time and it didn't work for me. I see you are in Europe, so don't know the products that are available to you there. The 2 products that people around here say are very effective are Nok Out and Anti Icky Poo. Perhaps someone from your area will stop in and offer some suggestions for things available in your area.

The problem with pee in the carpet is that it will go thru the carpet, the padding, and the floor under the padding. Unless you saturate the area over and over again, you don't get all the smell out. And once it is there, a cat will return to the spot over and over again. If extreme, sometimes you need to pull back the carpet and seal the floor under it, as it is very difficult to get the smell out of wood or concrete underlayment. If it comes to that, a shellac based product (either pure shellac or a shellac primer) will work.
