Question of the day - Saturday, January 7th

Good morningwavey.gif

I've recently posted some reviews on www.rottentomatoes.com.  So today's question is about movie ratings.

Do you check the ratings for movies on any sites or in the paper?  Do the ratings influence you decision to see the movie?

I usually check the rating on either Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB.  They influence me to some degree, but most of the time I make my decision based on the trailer, the actors/actresses, and the director.  I've found there are a lot of critics that I don't often agree with.

No, I don't typically read movie reviews. I prefer to make my own decision about a movie. Often the reviews are not very accurate to my viewing tastes.

I always check Fandango or Movies.com for listings and reviews. If a movie I am interested in has a bad review, I will gladly wait for the DVD/free TV versionclap.gif

I watch mainly old movies. But it use to make the difference of who was in the movie mostly. Now a days I don't know who they are.

We don't go to the movies anymore; I think the last time we saw a movie in a theatre, it was one of the earliest Harry Potter movies. And when we sit down and watch a movie at home, it's usually Rick who makes the decision on what to watch. We'll go through On Demand to see what's out there and, if there's something I want to see, we'll watch it. But on New Year's Eve, I think I chose one movie out of the three that we watched. We don't base our selections on much of anything....unless you include the trailers we've seen for them.

I never read or watch reviews. I feel it's one person's opinion, and I really hate the power that critics have - especially here in NYC with theatre. Bad reviews have been known to close shows, because people will go by what they read in the review rather than seeing something and forming their own opinion. Don't get me started.

Besides, if I read a review, I find that words and images in a review color what I'm watching, and I like to go to something with a blank mind and formulate what I'm seeing as I'm seeing it. I prefer to read reviews after I see something, and compare what I saw with what the critics saw.

There is a special place in H*** for reviewers.  Especially for online reviewers, who think they have to tear everything apart.

I might read a review AFTER I've seen a movie, but never before. I usually end up disagreeing with them anyway.

I watch based on my interest level; what reviewers say doesn't influence me one way or another and I have seen several very good movies that were slammed by critics and tried watching ones with superior reviews that were dreadful. Reviews, after all, are just the opinion of the viewer and it is unlikely that two viewers have the same point of view.

I always check the reviews of the movies we see. BUT that usually won't influence me one way or another. If I want to see the movie, I will see it and form my own opinion. biggrin.gif I always check on-line.wavey.gif

I sometimes read the reviews in our local paper, but when I think I might be interested in a particular movie, I ask at school who's seen it and what they thought of it. I don't recall ever specifically looking for online reviews.

I generally go see the movies just based on the trailer or word of mouth. If the previews look interesting, I'll go see the movie. Sometimes I will read the review after I watch the movie to see if I agree or not

Honestly; there are about a million other things I'd rather do with my money than go sit in a movie theater.  I don't even watch many at home.  But if something does catch my eye I'll look it up on Focus On the Family's website; plugged in online I think it's called.  They tell me whether it's got the stuff in it or not that usually turns me off (vulgar humor, too much profanity/nudity).  I haven't been to a movie theater in years.

I watch Canada AM and Richard Crouse usually gives pretty good reviews. He reviewed The Devil Inside which I wanted to go see and gave it 0 stars! Said it was terrible! I'll still watch it, but we'll download it instead of seeing it in the theater. wink.gif

Not movies but I check the ratings of new computer/console games. bigwink.gif

I do not read the movie reviews from critics. I goo based on the movie trailers. I remember when I used to read the movie reviews, I missed seeing Batman in theaters on the first day it was out!! When I finally watched Batman, I was like this movie critic is all wrong about this movie. But now I watch movies at home. One website I watch movies is called: http://www1.zmovie.tv/ I think it's a great movie website!!

I am a huge movie buff and watch them most of the time over the other offerings on cable.  I do read the reviews but tend to ignore them if the movie I want to watch has something of interest I might want to see.  I also watch movie trailers.  To me a movie is for my entertainment.  It's not a career decision so I tend to ignore other people's opinions of them and after watching them I will form my own opinion of them.  I also love theatrical productions and treat those reviews the same as I do movie reviews.

I've only ever read the reviews/ratings on one movie, The Spirit, which I still haven't seen.

I dont usually go to the movies, and since I had Netflix for awhile it didnt bother me much to pick the occasional bad movie.

I do check the ratings, but I find that most of the time, on rotten tomatoes at least, even the critics' reviews are not real critiques of the film, and they always agree with the movies' popularity. For example, both of the highest grossing movies that are in theaters now, Mission Impossible and Sherlock Holmes, are garbage IMO. But even the critics have given them top ratings. Based on what?? The cool action scenes? I don't get it..

Last night, I went to see Sherlock Holmes, at the BF's insistence..And I was so incredibly disappointed, and for the life of me I can't figure out what it is that people find appealing in this movie. What made Sherlock Holmes such a cool character was his ability to use logic and deductive reasoning and to come to incredible conclusions based on very little evidence...But in the movie, that was just not there.

And then, Mission Impossible, was just as bad, I don't even want to get into that .Maybe it's because the prequels were so unmemorable for both of these movies, that I no longer remember what happened, and both of these movies were counting on viewers to remember what they originally liked...Maybe that's why I am finding these movies so idiotic lol...

Sorry for going on this rant, it's really because feel irritated that I was asked to go to the movies and sit through 2 hours of garbage LOL...

This is really funny, because we always pick a movie to go to on Christmas Day. I really, really really wanted to see War Horse, but was outvoted by the rest of the family - they wanted to see Sherlock Holmes, because we had seen the first one and everyone remembers liking it alot. I, actually, thought it was okay, but I've totally forgotten it now. Definitely not memorable. Although, I said things like, "wow" and "cool" when we saw it, because I didn't want to start a big discussion.

So, Christmas, 2010..... we went to see Sherlock Holmes. Once again, the family thought it was great, I thought it was so-so, but went along with the "awesomness" because my brother pays for the tickets on Christmas Day, and I just didn't want to whine and say, "I wish we had seen War Horse"

I wish we had seen War Horse. sigh.gif
