My son called me last night w/ news that his wife is expecting. I am very, very happy for them

Right now, I prefer the company of cats than children. I wonder if being a grandma will change all that. Any first time (and also experienced) grandmas out there to share some insights?

I am a grandmother and a great grandmother.
It's wonderful.

The little ones come and visit, then go home with their parents and once again, you are happily alone with your sweet cats. :lol3:

Congratulations,
you are going to love being a Grandmother.

Congratulations!!! I have one grandchild...he turned two in Nov. He is the best!!! He's the love of my life. Yes, it's true that you get to enjoy and spoil. The raising is all out of your hands....hug, cuddle, play, laugh...that is going to be your reward. My daughter and my DIL (yes, it's a same-sex marriage) are awesome parents and I'm very proud of them.

Congratulations!!!!

P.S. I keep hoping that soon I will get the news that another grandbaby for me is on the way.

No experience myself, but I went to my friend's boxing day party this year, and her brother just had a baby and her mother (the new grandmother) was talking about it and was doting all over the bebe all night. CONGRATS!!

Congratulations! I have a grandson who will be six in February; our granddaughter just turned 4 this past December....two days before Christmas. And I just found out that I am going to have a great-niece around the end of May this year....my nephew and niece-in-law are expecting a little girl.
 A great-aunt....imagine that!

I had some issues with becoming a grandmother; for some reason it bothered me. In fact, when our son told me that they were expecting, Rick says it's the first time that he can ever remember me being truly speechless. But it's OK. I love those two children. There will be no more grandchildren, but I'm sure we'll be adding more great-nieces and, hopefully, some great-nephews to our brood along the way.

But I'm not really fond of kids overall and, like you, prefer having the cats around me more so than children. I am not what you would call a doting grandmother, whose life revolves solely around her grandchildren. I love to visit with them and I love it when they come to visit us. But I'm always glad to come back home and glad when the kids leave, too. As others have said, the neat thing about grandchildren is that you get the cuddles and the hugs and you get to spoil them. And then? They go home!

I hope this makes sense and I hope nobody is offended by my words. Some people just love children. I'm not one of them. One of my best friends said one time that he couldn't understand it. I'll coo at a cat, love it, and spend hours cuddling with our furkids. But I'll walk right by a baby without a second look. It made him crazy..

Congratulations! No kids here, but I'm really hoping to become a great-aunt. The nieces and nephews (17 - 30) don't seem to be in any hurry, though.

Brilliant news! Congratulations. My daughter would love to have a family but it has not worked out for her yet. I am not usually happy around babies or small children but all my friends say it changes completely when they are yours, and especially grandchildren, that you don't have to look after all the time. I am sure you will love it.

Honestly, when my daughter told me she was pregnant with her first child, I was not really thrilled. Olivia is 6 now, and I am getting my first chance to get to know her. She is just precious. The new one, 5 week old Raven has been my little buddy since the first time I held her at 3 weeks. Olivia is a huge cat lover, is very gentle with them, and says she will teach her baby sister to be nice to kitties. Raven likes to nap holding on to Pearl's tail. She is too small to pull it hard enough to hurt, and Pearl seems to like it. I wouldn't change a thing about being a grandma.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
Congratulations!!!

Pam I don't find what you said offensive at all. I can not stand other peoples kids with the exception of one in limited contact. But I love m&k and df and i are expecting. There is no rule that says if you have kids you must love all kids or if you are agrandparent you must have your world revolve around your grandkids. I figure as long as you love them its all good.

Pam; I like kids but I think I understand what you mean.  I used to say that I looked forward to being a Grandma more than a Mom.  But I do love being a mom.  It's just I love the routine/consistency that you don't get with small kids around!!  I enjoy being one on one with kids; but I don't think I'd really do well with a big group. DD has her first "kids" birthday party in a couple weeks...we'll see how I do since they will be in MY house!  But it's just a few hours.
I do not foresee myself with a ton of children; but if somehow I ended up with a bunch I'd adjust!

yayi- i do think you'll enjoy being a grandma!  Do the fun stuff and send em home!  My Mom and Step-dad are kid people; but I still think they enjoy the sending home part too! Fortunately for me; they do like to keep my DD overnight now and then!  They just prefer she sleep through the night when they do!  (But in DD's defense; if they'd put her to bed the way I told them she probably would have.
)
