Congratulations! I have a grandson who will be six in February; our granddaughter just turned 4 this past December....two days before Christmas. And I just found out that I am going to have a great-niece around the end of May this year....my nephew and niece-in-law are expecting a little girl.
A great-aunt....imagine that!
I had some issues with becoming a grandmother; for some reason it bothered me. In fact, when our son told me that they were expecting, Rick says it's the first time that he can ever remember me being truly speechless. But it's OK. I love those two children. There will be no more grandchildren, but I'm sure we'll be adding more great-nieces and, hopefully, some great-nephews to our brood along the way.
But I'm not really fond of kids overall and, like you, prefer having the cats around me more so than children. I am not what you would call a doting grandmother, whose life revolves solely around her grandchildren. I love to visit with them and I love it when they come to visit us. But I'm always glad to come back home and glad when the kids leave, too. As others have said, the neat thing about grandchildren is that you get the cuddles and the hugs and you get to spoil them. And then? They go home!
I hope this makes sense and I hope nobody is offended by my words. Some people just love children. I'm not one of them. One of my best friends said one time that he couldn't understand it. I'll coo at a cat, love it, and spend hours cuddling with our furkids. But I'll walk right by a baby without a second look. It made him crazy..
