Potential UTI or something, need advice!!

So my cat is alternating between sleeping, trying but failing to pee and wailing in pain. A quick Google search suggests this is a Urinary Tract Infection, kidney failure or something of that sort.

Obviously this has me very worried and I'm taking him to the vet ASAP when they open in a few hours, but what can I do for now to try to help the situation?

He really doesn't seem like his usual self, something is very wrong :( Advice anyone?

I'm very sorry you're having to deal with this. frown.gif Since you are unable to get to the vet at this moment, trying mixing apple cider vinegar into his food. When my cat's urinary tract was blocked, gave him apple cider vinegar in each meal, and within a couple of days he was fine. I'm not sure if it will do anything immediately, but hopefully it will help! Other than that, just keep him comfortable. Good vibes for you and your kitty! vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

Bladder blockages can be fatal... and they are for sure incredibly painful as the cat's bladder slowly swells beyond it's capacity to stretch. If this is indeed a blockage, your kitty needs to be seen by an emergency vet ASAP so they can relieve your cat's condition!!!!!

I know, I read this elsewhere. The vet opens in 4 hours and I don't know of any emergency vets, so we'll just have to wait and hope for the best.

Fortunately he's happily asleep at the moment though, so that gives me hope he'll be alright until we at least get to the vets.

Call your vet - they usually have the phone number and address for the nearest Emergency vet in their answering machine.... You can then go in immediately.... vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

My Marvin had this at a year old, he'd go in the box and not pee, also was eating/drinking less than normal and disassociating himself from everyone

Vet did a urinalysis and sure enough, he had a bladder infection.  2 week antibiotic regimen was prescribed, I believe he started to feel better in like 24 hours after the first antibiotics

Please do let us know what the vet says.  Today needs to be a vet day.  If this is a blockage, his diet will need to change.  It can be treated rather easily provided he gets to the vet on time.  That is if it is a blockage.  My cat had one.   Doctor said his diet needed to change and he has been fine for years since.  The next step the vet joked would be what is referred to as a "He/She Operation."  But But all joking aside, urinary blockages will be very very serious if they do not get immediate attention and I hope that kitty will be better!!!  vibes.gif

Okay so I took him to the vets yesterday as an emergency appointment and it turns out he had lots of crystals(?) in his bladder. That's been sorted and he's now okay to come home, and whilst here he'll need a special diet and I assume anti-biotics.

On-top of that the original bill of £280 now appears to have been cut down to a much more affordable £130 so I'm gonna go pick him up in an hour or two! Thank you all! :-)

OMG - I am SO glad you took him in.... that can be lethal really fast if it turns into a blockage and it is not treated frown.gif
Excellent that he will be on the mends now vibes.gif
Try to give him a wet only diet - the more moisture he gets on his diet, the better vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif that antibiotics clear up the infection quickly and he likes the prescription food. clap.gif that the bill was cut.

Sooo glad your boy's received care and is going to be fine!!

Cats on kibble are often dehydrated, which both stresses their organs and results in concentrated urine. Since crystals are a natural part of the urine make-up, dehydration can cause them to cluster and stick together, causing blockages and / or painful cystitis (inflammation).

No antibiotics are needed to deal with crystals, just a temporary diet change to break them up, then another diet change to canned to increase the cat's water intake and prevent a recurrence. Antibiotics are only needed if the cat has some type of infection.

Awesome that you get to pick your boy up soon!! heartpump.gif Many vibes and get well thoughts are winging their way to you!!!!! vibes.gif  vibes.gif  vibes.gif
