Conjunctivitis(?) and vaccinations

Hello,

My three-ish year old rescue, Sammy, seems to have pretty constant reddish-brown discharge from her eyes. No other symptoms, and she doesn't rub them or anything. The last time I took her to the vet, she reckoned it was conjunctivitis and prescribed eye drops. Well, the discharge stopped for a while but it's back again, and Sammy and her sister Suzie (aged four-ish, but the shelter they came from called them sisters) are due to have their (voluntary) rabies vaccinations shortly.

My question is, do you think I can have Sammy vaccinated even with the conjunctivitis (of course, I'd get the vet to examine her eyes again while we're there)? Or should I wait until it's been treated?

Thanks in advance,

Kutoja, the nervous first-time cat-mum.

Welcome to TCS clap.gifclap.gif. I am glad you found us!!! I would not recommend getting any vaccines done right now..... In fact, I made that mistake with my Perla who had a watery in November and then allowed her to get her Distemper vaccine in December. It has been downhill since then as she became sick with a virus and is now on antibiotics and eye ointment ...... I would wait until the eyes are cleared up and I think your vet would agree anyway. hugs.gifhugs.gif Have you tried L-Lysine?? It comes in a powder form and I buy mine from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/NOW-Foods-Lysine-Powder-Pound/dp/B0013OSNOM It is easily accepted by all cat's as it has no taste and easily mixes into wet food. Start with 1/4 tsp. 500 mg. twice daily for five day's then go to 1/8 tsp. 250 mg twice daily. for about two week's. Maintenance dose is 1/8 tsp. 250 mg. Once daily. Much luck with your kitties wavey.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

Oh dear, I suspect Sammy would turn her nose up at her food if I added that to it - my (three) cats eat wet Applaws and Almo Nature (and dry Applaws in the evenings: it's only got about 20 % carbs) regularly, neither of which has a very strong taste. They only eat strongly-flavoured food (Sheba or Mjau - which I think might be called Bozita abroad) once a week for variety. Sammy's an extremely picky eater who regularly decides that she doesn't want anything to do with something she never had a problem with previously... Most recently beef in any form: raw, tinned Almo, Carny exotic buffalo...

I'll give it a try, though. I wonder whether I could get that locally...

I'm actually starting to wonder whether the constant low-level discharge has anything to do with her breathing noises: she always sounds as if she has a stuffy nose. No nasal discharge, just a lot of dry sniffing. I've mentioned it to her vet, asked if it was tight nasal passages or what (she's got a shorter muzzle than Suzie or my 5-plus kilo baby boy, Silky), but they've never really looked into it. As soon as they hear the words "no nasal discharge or excessive sneezing", they just sorta shrug and forget about it.
