There is no exact known cause for diabetes in cats. Some of it is genetics. Some may very well be diet and exercise. There are excellent and extensive articles on the subject in a variety of places. This is a good place you may want to begin. Also your veterinarian will be a huge source of help with diet if he/she is educated on the subject. http://pets.webmd.com/cats/guide/diabetes-symptoms-cats Your cat food looks pretty good ingredient wise and I'm glad to see you are carb concerned :D

This thread is from 2012... Regardless, I feed Taste of the Wild dry. It's made by the same company (Diamond) and you can get it at tractor supply. If you can afford it (It's only a few dollars more), it's a little healthier as it's grain free.

I was excited about the 4Health food and went to Tractor Supply to get a bag for my dogs, who are sensitive to grain, especially corn. They are doing very well on the beef and potato flavor, and we are very satisfied. I wanted to try the grain free for my cats, but was disappointed to see that it was fish based. Whitefish and sweet potato, I think it was. I wonder why they do not make a chicken-based grain free for cats? Or does my store just not carry it?

They make a chicken based pet food, but it does have grain in it and a little bit of fish:

I feed this to my cats and although it does contain some fish, it is grain-free. They LOVE it too! So there's that...

It's so funny to see this brand of food at the top of the list for discussion; I just bought some of this (canned) yesterday and was going to come here and ask about it.  Seems as though what is being discussed here though is the dry...

Fed it to my 2 fur babies this morning and got and "eh" response.  They didn't finish it, but did dive into it with gusto.  They do that a lot though: dive into their meal with gusto, then walk away after only a few minutes of eating.  Typically they will go back to it after a little while though.  I am a "leaver outer" of food, no ill effects so far; they manage most days to finish off the bowl after a few hours.

I will continue offering them this food to see how it goes; I bought chicken and turkey flavors.

That's funny- I got some of the canned food and my cats reacted in the same way. I got 6 cans and each time, I ended up letting the dogs finish it. The cats licked all the moisture off the food and left the rest. I am a lever-outer, too, and usually all the food disappears after a few hours.

ROFL, I got 6 cans of each as well!  Too funny.  My cats are so weird though: I can feed them something one day and they totally LOVE it, but the next time it's in the bowl, they seem like they hate it.  I have spent the last few months trying to find good food, since I have a cat with kidney issues.  I moved them to all wet, ditched the Friskies and  have been working through numerous more expensive brands.  When I read the can of the 4health, and it had meats listed as first ingredients (not meat by products) I figured I would give it a try.  Tonight they will get the turkey, I'll let you know how it goes.

I went through the same finicky issues with my kitties, which is why I feed them dry now. They both got wet when they were kittens, but they eventually got so finicky no brand or flavor was good enough. Then if I just left it out for a long time (basically saying eat it, or starve), they'd end up tearing something up to exact revenge on me. I also got sick of constantly driving from store to store to get particular brands and flavors that they'd like, only to have them snub me at meal time.

My kitties don't have any health problems and both are good water drinkers (I filter it). Therefore, I don't worry much about not feeding them wet anymore. They love their TOTW, and that's ok with me.

Well, dry isn't an option now, but, unlike your kitties mine don't exact revenge if I do the "well that's what's for dinner, eat it or go hungry".  They do eventually eat it...so I know they are just messing with with me.  For example, last night's PM feeding was Wellness chicken, with 1/4 of total portion Primal freeze dried chicken -- they chowed it down!  Their AM feeding this morning was exactly the same mix -- the bowls were still full when I left the house!  They did eat it, eventually, it just wan't a chow-down like last night.  Krazy Kats!

Does anyone know what the phosphorus amount is in the 4Health Adult Chicken canned cat food?  I looked online and it gives most of the other nutrient information, but not the phosphorous.  I called Tractor Supply and they don't know and have referred me to another company.  I called that company, and of course they are closed and I probably won't be able to get in touch with them until Monday.  It's not urgent but since I found this discussion I thought maybe someone might know.

Thanks!

Thanks for your help, Ondine and Ducman!

Now I don't have to worry about 4Health.

I'm glad that 4Health is putting out wet food, definitely since it might be a great price as well! I never knew there were two types of diabetes. It's impossible for us to know if the diabetes were genetics since she was a stray as well.

I have a feeling it was type 2 because she was an indoor cat that mostly layed around all day. My mom always kept her food bowl full.., and yes, she was fairly plump. Gosh I feel awful.

Never again. Anyways, I'll look into kitty fountains. I never really heard of them.

I'm looking into wet cat food. Since 4Health is possibly the only good brand of cat food in my town, I'll probably have to go with a supermarket wet food. =/ I'll just look around more. So far, the best I've found is Fancy Feast Appetizers. Here's one flavor's ingredients: http://www.fancyfeast.com/appetizers/steamed-wild-alaskan-salmon/ Itdoesn't contain a balanced nutrition, but it does provide the kitty with water, and it was the only wet food I found that didn't contain by-products, etc. Thanks again for your help!
It seems like too many carbs to me I would stick with wet I think all dry foods can lead to possible diabetes.

I am fortunate to have a Tractor Supply  store close to me.  All my cats love 4 Health All Stages cat food.  They did not like the grain free one.  Also all the canned foods put out by this company has carrageenan in it.  This is bad for humans and pets.  Dr. Weil  says this about it:

When I first wrote about carrageenan on this site 10 years ago, I reported that some animal studies had linked degraded forms of it (the type not used in food) to ulcerations and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. But around that time, a prominent researcher in the field, Joanne K. Tobacman, M.D., now associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, conducted studies linking undegraded carrageenan - the type that is widely used in foods - with malignancies and other stomach problems. (Degraded and undegraded carrageenan differ by molecular weight with undegraded carrageenan having the higher weight.)

Over the years Dr. Tobacman has published 18 peer-reviewed studies that address the biological effects of carrageenan and is convinced that it is harmful to human health. In April 2012, she addressed the National Organic Standards Board on this issue and urged reconsideration of the use of carrageenan in organic foods.

In her presentation, Dr. Tobacman said that her research has shown that exposure to carrageenan causes inflammation and that when we consume processed foods containing it, we ingest enough to cause inflammation in our bodies. She explained that all forms of carrageenan are capable of causing inflammation. This is bad news. We know that chronic inflammation is a root cause of many serious diseases including heart disease, Alzheimer's  and Parkinson's  diseases, and cancer.

Dr. Tobacman also told the board that in the past, drug investigators actually used carrageenan to cause inflammation in tissues in order to test the anti-inflammatory properties of new drugs. And she reported further that when laboratory mice are exposed to low concentrations of carrageenan for 18 days, they develop "profound" glucose intolerance and impaired insulin action, both of which can lead to diabetes.

She maintains that both types of carrageenan are harmful and notes that "degraded carrageenan inevitably arises from higher molecular weight (food grade) carrageenan." Research suggests that acid digestion, heating, bacterial action and mechanical processing can all accelerate degradation of food-grade carrageenan.

All told, I recommend avoiding regular consumption of foods containing carrageenan. This is especially important advice for persons with inflammatory bowel disease.  My dog ate food with carrageenan in it and he kept having diarrhea from it.  So now I no longer by any canned food that has carrageenan in it.

I don't know how old this post is, but I bought the dry food trying to find something my cats would eat. I had a hard time finding did they would eat they almost starved before they seemed on fruskies surf and turf. I must have spent hundreds of dollars. Later one of them started having digestive issues and was on the hunt again. Finally found 4health. Very pleased with it. They eat less because it takes less to fill them up. As a result they are both getting to a healthy weight level. Less grains means less filler ingredients. They get full as a result with less food.

I'm glad I found this thread. I've been researching less expensive cat food, since money is a bit tight right now. My cat normally eats Blue Wilderness, but I may just try this 4Health and see what he thinks of it! I really don't want to feed him crap food. :-(
