Hi guys. I'm new here, I was looking for advice on moving out with my cats and long distance travelling. I'm happy to find cat lovers from everywhere :D.

At the moment, I'm dealing with my old street cat I rescued a little over a year ago, and he's got a problem with dried food. He got in an accident while in the streets and it healed very well, but a little "off" putting pressure on his collon, so he needs to eat only wet food. Now I'm not really rich but I hate giving my cat only friskies wet food I feel like he's eating mcdonald's everyday. Anyone knows brands that are not too expensive but still good quality? Or at least good quality even if it comes with a high price, I can probably manage, i just don't know which one to take. The other ones eat dry Orijen Chicken formula

here's my old man saying hi

Natural Balance and Nutro canned foods are pretty decent and not too expensive. If you buy the big can of Innova, it's reasonably priced, but I don't know if your cat will eat reheated food. Triumph is good, but it seems to be hard to find. Trader Joe's store brand is high-quality and very inexpensive.

You can feed some good brands and some lower-quality brands. That will help keep the cost down but still provide him with the higher-quality nutrients.

Hi Faye :wavey:. Aww what a handsome kitty . I agree that the larger the can the more economical. But I have six cat's and can go through a 12 oz. can in one day. Most cat's will turn their nose up at reheated food the next day, but some not. Trader Joes wet foods are reasonable. Halo, Wellness and Natural Balance might be worth a look. Innova also. Most of the higher quality cans are going to be at least $1.00 or more per 5.5 oz can. It is expensive to feed kitties quality wet foods. My problem right now is picky kitties. Especially Perla. I am going to try Wellness Core wet again, but that is a bit more pricey than the other's. Good luck, so many brands to choose from.

Hi Faye,

I am also new to Cat Site and this is my first post.  I recommend Lotus cat food.  My two cats have been eating the dry Lotus food for a couple of months and it really helps them kept the food down, so it's worth the next bucks.  I have one that is a real up-chucker.  I know you need wet food and Lotus has just come out with three favors of wet food that my cats like and keep down.

Thanks everyone. I've been looking at the raw posts and as a raw eater myself, i know the benefits or going  to what is biologically correct for our bodies. It has cured and prevented lots of diseases for me, so I figure out it should do the same for the cats and promote great health? I don't know if Georgi (thats his name) would be okay on raw meat that i would grind? I'm raw vegan and haven't touched meat in 10 years, but i'm willing for my 6 fluffy carnivores.

In Quebec here, we don't really have much choice in cat food, or maybe I just don't know where to shop. He tried nutrience before, and wholeness. Whenever its big cans, there's no way he's eating reheated, ever. I'll look the other brands out, maybe we have them here. Thanks for replies!!

I love this site already. I'm an animal rights activist and i do Trap neuter release as well. Yay for other cat lovers.

If you're interested in feeding raw, there are a few things to consider. First, do you want to stay commercial, or manage your kitties' diets yourself?

If you want to stay commercial, all the reasons for rotating canned foods are still valid for rotating raw. This TCS thread lists quite a few commercially available raw foods: Questions about commercial raw, and additional info on specific brands has been popping up in one of our member's transition threads as well: This is going to be one for the books! Transitioning Lucky, Bugsy and Hope to Raw.

If you prefer to take personal control of your cats' diet, I recommend reading the articles A Frankenprey / Whole Prey Feeding Guide and Taking the Plunge! from CatCentric.org. In addition, RawFedCats.org has a good transition guide: Transitioning Your Cat to a Raw Diet.

I frankenprey feed. It requires commitment to ensure the diet remains balanced, but it is far more cost effective than commercial brands. And, of course, I know exactly how fresh the foods are and can tweak the menu to suit my cats' personal needs. I highly recommend it!

Best regards.

Hi,

Sorry to hijack this thread.

I recently got my first cat from a rescue shelter.  Before I knew any better, I picked up some cans of friskies wet cat food and found that she liked the gravy varieties.  After doing some reading, I am trying to change her diet some.  She is currently on Blue Buffalo and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul dry mixes.  She has free roam to eat as much as she wants from those two varieties during the day and I have noticed she eats some but not much.

I have been having trouble getting her to eat healthy wet cat food, the only ones that she will touch are friskies.  I have tried several varieties of Blue Buffalo and Wellness brand wet cat food, and have ended up wasting them all.  I think part of the problem is that the health varieties I have bought so far are in the form of a food paste, rather than the liquid gravy form of the friskies food she likes.  Does anyone know of a good natural brand cat food that comes in gravy form.  She seems to prefer red meat but chicken sometimes works also.

Thanks,

Zack

Note, I did find a sliced salmon in gravy Wellness brand, she did not even touch the food.  So I think I would like to start out with a beef based food.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Unfortunately, I think most of the chunks and gravy foods are poultry or seafood. :dk:

When my cats liked only the gravy, I used to take the pate foods I wanted them to eat, and I added a little warm water, put it in a blender, and turned the whole thing into gravy. If you want to add chunks, consider cutting up a little raw beef or lamb or something. :)

A good base may be ZiwiPeak. It comes in lamb or venison.

You can also look into Wysong rotational foods - or using their supplement to make the foods balanced and complete. I think they have a lot of chunks and gravy options? You might have to call them to make sure... http://www.wysong.net/canned-wet-cat-food.php

You can also consider some of the commercial raw foods. She may like those - and they come in vension, bison, beef, lamb, etc.

I stopped by Petco after work today and bought pretty much every 3 ounce can.  I started with the one I figured she would most likely agree with and seem to have found a winner by AvoDerm.  I will start a tally for wet cat foods as rated by Vivi.

Winners:

AvoDerm: Salmon & Chicken Entree in Gravy

Friskies: Pretty much any "red meat flavor" in gravy

Natural Balance: Vension & Green Pea Formula

Losers:

Blue Buffalo: Savory Seafood Stew

Wellness : Beef and Chicken Formula; Sliced Salmon Entree Cuts in Gravy;

For the sake of space I snipped out the pic of you absolutely gorgeous "old man"
There are several out there that you can check out.  I'll recommend the 2 from the company I work for.  Nutro Max and Nutro Natural Choice wet foods.  My cats love them both.  Both are excellent foods and Nutro Max will not break your bank.  A couple of other brands out there are really good too and I buy them now and then to give my kitties a different texture, formula and flavors.  Good luck on your quest!

I also use Nutro Max & Nutro Natural Choice. They run about 85 cents at the Petco where I live. They are healthy yet very inexpensive. Friskies has a lot of fillers in it so it'd be worth spending the extra couple of cents because this food has less fillers and is just overall better. My cat is a year & 3 months and I've been feeding her those brands plue Natural Balance and Nature's Variety (which are a bit more expensive) ever since she was 6 months old.

I'm new here too and my cat is a feral we took in. We feed only canned food, low carb, no or minimal grain if we can.

He eats: Blue Buffalo Wilderness Duck which has a lot of gravy, so does Instinct Rabbit and Lamb, and Taste of the Wild Canyon Blend. He also eats Natural Balance, Evo, Before Grain - the quail, Wellness Core, and Wysong makes a bunch of meat Au Jus that are mostly gravy you can add to other cans if he likes gravy. Merrick also makes a lot of gravy style varieties too.

I use Petfood Direct and buy by the case because it's cheaper in a lot of cases. I am also going to try Hound and Gator Rabbit, because my guy loves rabbit, but it's hard to find in stock sometimes.

We found that feral cats tend to like texture and wetness and strong smelling meat. You can even make your own gravy using chicken and turkey giblets boiled in plain water and then pureed with a stick blender.

Oh I forgot, the cats will eat less on a good quality food, so it actually saves you money in the long run. They don't need to eat as much to compensate for the "filler."

I had been feeding my kitten Iam's Proactive wet food, but had been considering switching to Nutro Healthy Choice since it's not that much more expensive and seems to have less by-products. But I've seen a lot of talk about previous recalls and health issues... Does anyone know whether they're still having those problems?
