Will my kittens ever rub their heads against me?

Hi all - hoping for words of wisdom from experienced kitten people! Two weeks ago I adopted two male 4-month-old kittens. They are very good, sweet kittens. They love being held and petted. They let me cuddle them on their backs like babies and scritch their tummies - they purr the entire time. They seem to have accepted me as mom.

But they never come to me for affection - I have to seek them out. And they never rub their heads against my hand, or rub their bodies against my legs. If I put my hand in front of them, they might sniff it once (or they might not), but they never rub their cheeks against it or push their heads into my hand for more petting.

These are the first cats I've ever known who don't do this... Is this behavior they might grow into? Or is this just who they are? Note: they haven't been neutered yet - that's happening next weekend.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Some of that is adult behavior, actually related to marking territory.  So, don't give up hope.

As affectionate as it sounds like they are, they should be all you want, eventually.

Kittens don't mark territory? It was a long time ago, but I seem to remember my previous kittens rubbing their heads against me... Maybe I'm not remembering correctly...

This is upsetting me because my previous cats were SO affectionate, and I was hoping for very affectionate cats this time too. I thought these boys would be when I cuddled them at the adoption event and they purred their heads off... I'm worried that they don't come to me on their own. It seems weird to me - if they like it so much when I cuddle and pet them, why don't they come to me for more?

I agree.

Besides, they tend to get more affectionate as older they got.   :)

Good luck!

Give them time - you've only had them a couple of weeks so they are probably somewhat unsure about the new environment and you.

When I adopted my kitten he was 12 weeks ago, the adoption people told me he was very affectionate and cuddly, but when I brought him home he would purr a lot around me, but didn't really cuddle. About 3 weeks later after he had some time to get used to his space and to me all he did was cuddle. Now every time I come home from work and sit down he runs up on my lap and rubs his face all over mine. Just give it a little more time and I'm sure they will start to cuddle more!

i say just give it time. I adopted a 6 month old feral cat. For the first two weeks, although he'd purr if you pet him, he mostly stayed under the bed except to eat or use the litter box. he'd play with you if you had string or something but was pretty skittish. Flash forward five weeks and he's VERY affection with me and rubs himself all over me and follows me from room to room.

So just be patient :) good luck!
