New cat - name thread

As I posted in Crossing the Bridge.  Ollie sadly and very unexpectedly passed away 48 hours ago.  Some of you who have been on this forum for at least 3 years might remember that the primary motivating factor behind adopting Ollie at the time was to help Ally feel comfortable by never being alone - b/c due to her traumatic experience as a kitten, she's always had abandonment issues.  Ollie's passing is certainly going to make that worse.

I personally was and am devastated about Ollie's death.  That night is probably burned into my memory forever.

Anyways, Ally still can't be alone.  I'm on winter break, and start school again in a little over 2 weeks.  I decided to get another cat to be both her and my friend.  No cat can replace Ollie, but another cat will hopefully help Ally feel less alone, and I'm sure I'll get incredibly (possibly overly) attached to the new little guy too.  In order for the two of them to be friendly enough for me to leave alone in 2 weeks, I needed to get moving, regardless of how depressed I feel right now.  Without another cat, because of how much work law school is, Ally would get virtually no attention (maybe an hour a day), and I can't have that.

So, I went out today and got lucky.  I found a ~4 month old kitten up for adoption through Adopt-A-Stray.  Coincidentally another red tabby, but doesn't look like Ollie very much at all.  Very different.  I feel bad that I adopted from a no-kill shelter/adoption program because I think I really should have adopted to save a life, but they told me that they adopt from the kill-shelters to save cats, so therefore adopting and freeing up resources still should help save a cat from a shelter that is ok with euthanizing unadopted animals, just indirectly (or so I'm telling myself).

I will take and post a pic soon, but he's got marbling rather than stipes, a lot of white (including socks), and is adorable.  His shelter name was Fred.  Ollie's was Harvey.

Here is a pic of him from the Adopt-A-Stray website - I don't think they'll mind me posting it since I adopted him:

And another (he's on the right)

s1679a4057353m10033978.jpg

I'd have adopted his sister too, but I have a 2 cat apartment limit (or so they say, some people in my building have more), and she's going to get adopted with a third red tabby kitten, so she won't be alone.

I don't like Fred as a name, but I can't think of a name for him.  I think the thread for naming Ollie is around here somewhere, but I've gotten kind of rusty on how to use forums from being away and hardly being on here for so long.

I want the name to be within a similar naming scheme to what there was before.  It's kind of a theme.  So, it was Ally and Ollie before.  Now it's Ally and _______.

Names that people have suggested are Wally, and Opie.  I'm not sure I like either.  If you could, please help me come up with names within the scheme/theme and then I can put them up as a poll.  Thanks.

I am sorry for the loss of Ollie.  I know how devastating it is to lose a young, vibrant cat.

Congratulations on the new kitten!  He is cute!

I lost my brother 8 years ago this coming Monday.  His nickname was "Wally."  I think that would make an excellent name for your new kitty.

Good luck!

Alfiemight be third choice if you wnat to stick to a theme for your crew... As in "ie" endings. So glad you've decided to make room in your heart and life for another needy kitty.

I am please that you chose to go ahead and adopt right away.hugs.gif

Your tears for Ollie will continue but both you and Ally needed  this.

Out of the names suggested so far, Wally is cute but he looks like an Alfie to me. rub.gif

I am sure others will suggest more names...

he sure is handsome.biggrinlove.gif

LawGuy, I have been wondering where you were.  Sometimes I miss posts, but I haven't seen you around and was concerned.  I am very sorry about Ollie.  hugs.gif  Please don't feel guilty about adopting from a no-kill shelter...it does free up space for a kitten or cat in dire need.  Your new kitten is very cute.  I like the name Mercury.  But my aunt had a cat named Murph, so I'm partial to the name Murphy.  (Murph was a sweet cat.)   And Wally is certainly a good name.  Whatever you chose to call him, I'm glad you got him.

Nurseangel - I'm fine (aside from Ollie's passing of course).  I've just been incredibly busy and haven't had time to be online anywhere really.  My days have been spent waking up at 4:30 AM, working from ~5:45 AM - 10 PM, passing out, waking up at 4:30 AM and doing it all over again.

It's never easy to lose a cat, esp one as young as Ollie was. You can never 'replace' them, we know that. But you were right to have Ally's concerns in mind. And adopting from a no-kill shelter is the same as saving a life from a kill shelter, as far as I'm concerned. That frees up space for them to save another kitty from a kill shelter. Don't question your motives right now - you were focusing on what's right for Ally.

Lawguy, I am with the others with the adoption.... you did save a life hugs.gifheartpump.gif
I have no idea about a name..... I am here to just drop a hug, say I am so sorry again for your loss of Ollie rbheart.gif, and congratulate you for the new kitten!

I'm with the others in that I am so sorry to hear about Ollie (I tend to stay away from the RB forum, it's too hard on me), and that you shouldn't feel bad AT ALL for adopting a cat in need. Even no kill shelters aren't true homes for cats. I may in the minority here, but I feel that it's much more compassionate for a cat to go the the RB rather than spend many years at a no-kill shelter, where their basic needs are met, but they just can't get as much love as they deserve.

As far as names, I am just terrible when it comes to naming pets. I am lucky that both of my babies were named at the shelter with names that I not only like, but that fit them as well. There was one guy I was looking at before I adopted Daymon, who turned out to not be a good fit with my situation... he was a red boy and they named him Cheetos. doh2.gif All I could think was what I would change his name to if I adopted him... But some other cats that I was looking at had names I liked - Brock, Liam, and Harrison. I don't know if any of those would fit your guy, but I thought they were cute (oh - and manly... laughing02.gif).

I am so sorry to hear about Ollie, such a sudden loss. I totally remember when you adopted him, know how much you and Ally loved him....

Looking at your new beautiful boy, I have a couple name suggestions......first going with the _lly theme is Rawlly, but honestly he looks like a Bo (bow) to me....Ally and Bo, has a ring to itwink.gifwavey.gif

Once again so sorry for Ollie's passinghugs.gif

You might consider Tolly, or possibly Tully.  Tully is the only human character in C.J. Cherryh's "Chanur" series, 5 books about non-human space adventure, with the Hani the protagonists.  The Hani are catlike.  They take in Tully as a fugitive on the docks at Meetpoint Station.  Very good books (and I can send them to you in epub format if you want to read them).

I have said many times that any cat who dies leaves a hole the exact shape of the that cat in your heart, so no other cat can ever fill it perfectly, but it can make the hole smaller and less painful.

My orange tabbie recently died, and his named was Harley, and when he was a kitten, he looked a bit like your fella.

here is a pic of him when he was 6 months. So feel free to take that name as it would be cool to pass onto another orange fella.

Otherwise, another cool "O" name that ends with an IE is Ozzie.

I've also heard the name Izzie before, which is cool.

Tolly is the name of my Red Boy who became a Bridge Angel on November 29, 2011. While Tolly was also a classic red tabby with white, this little baby does not look much like my sweet red boy. However if the name fits, I'm sure my Tolly rbheart.gif would be honored to share it.

Congratulations to you all on the new family member, LawGuy.

PS that being said, to avoid confusing Ally, you may want to find a name that does not sound so much like Ally OR Ollie. The little guy will let you know what his name is, if you give him a chance to tell you. smile.gifheartpump.gif

just thought of another cool name. I always wanted to name a cat this, but it didn't fit my current kitten.

Grizzie (short for Grizwald)

Oh hon, I'm so sorry to hear about Ollie. hugs.gif I lost my Monster on Christmas Eve and I know how hard it is. I'm so glad though that you are getting a buddy for Ally. I agree, you DID save a life!

The orange tabby in my avatar is Harley, so I'm partial to that name. Ozzie is cute too, but it may be a little to much like Ollie. How about Monkey? I'm sure the little guy will let you know what he wants to be called. He's a cutie!

that's two orange Harley's! love it.

So sorry about your loss :( but congrats on a new kitty.

LOL, my hubby named him. He's always wanted a Harley (bike, that is) and I told him this is the only kind of Harley we could afford!

that's why I named him Harley, because his purr sounded like a motorbike!

Your boy is very cute.

My deepest regrets on the passing of your boy.angel.gif   I agree with otto that you might want to consider a name that does not sound like Ally or Ollie.  But if you are set on ending in a "y" sound, how about Rudy?

Other names

Ziggy

Alfie

Archie

You might try Rusty. I don't think my red girl would mind using her name, since it is a boy name.

Aw look at the little cutie! I posted in the RB thread, but just wanted to pop in again to say I'm so sorry. hugs.gif

Reading through the thread, this did strike me...

And that being said, as he's a red boy, I love the suggestion for "Rudy," for what it's worth LOL. Every Rudy I've ever known has been really sweet.

I do hope you'll find time to let us know what name he/you chose!

I am very sorry to hear about your losing Ollie so suddenly and so young. frown.gif

Your new little guy is a cutie! I hope he and Ally will become friends really soon. I think Andy would be a nice fit, Ally and Andy. However, as posted above,I suppose he'll let you know what his name really is. heartpump.gif

Sorry about your rbheart.gif Ollie.....

Your new baby is just adorable and very handsome. Love his marking's..... I think he look's like an ABNER clap.gifclap.gifclap.gif OR an ALFIE....... Sticking with the "A" names to go along with Ally.... Good luck with your new kitten happy2.gif

"Tully" is a cutie, no doubt about it.  Aren't you looking forward to the whole kitten thing, again?

Honestly, not really.  I'd do anything to just have Ollie back.  I already love this new cat, but the kitten thing is exhausting.  I adopted a kitten thinking that Ally would perceive a kitten as less of a threat than a grown cat, but so far she's been hissing at him if he gets closer than say, 2 feet from her.  She's getting better, originally she hissed from 10 feet, and it's only been 2 days of introductions.  He on the other hand, is eager to be her friend.  She's just resisting right now.  She just lost her best friend and now this new cat wants to get to know her.  So, I get it if it's just too much for her to handle.  The up side is I've seen no behavior from her to suggest she'd go beyond hissing and a little growling.  She's never had any violent tendencies, but I still wanted to play it safe.
