Hi

My kitten has been diagnoised with malabsorption and she is doing great. She gained weight and is now a lot happier and healthier, but we are only just in the first month of managing her condition and i was wondering if anyone else had experienced this illness.

She has gaone from 1.4kg to 2.2kg in 4 weeks.

At the moment we have finished her antibitotic / anti inflamitory today and she has a week left of her probiotic, she has been on weekly b12 injections but we are going to try to go to fortnightly then hopefully if she copes with that they want to try them monthly

Amber has been eatingthe Royal Canin sensativity tins and we have introduced the hills gastro intestinal biscuits, although she seems to be quite gassy again when she has these biscuits.

Any advise would help

Thanks Jane

I hadn't heard of malabsorption before at least in cats.  I have heard of it in humans, especially children.  Inability to adequately absorb nutrients from food is a hallmark of IBD though.  With IBD it's a matter of trial and error to find what works for a cat, there doesn't seem to be a one size fits all way to control it.  One of my cats has IBD apparently in just his upper digestive system because he only had the vomiting and periods of not eating.  I never did figure out a trigger for it so he is on prednisolone to control it.  IBD cats do tend to be thin because they aren't absorbing everything from their food.

Please take a look at the thread "vibes for Riley".  I wonder if this might be something to ask your vet about.  It sounds like the same kind of thing.  My cat Arthur is not absorbing his nutrients either.  Therefore, he has to have the powder sprinkled on his food.  I think it is called Pancreatic insufficiency in the US.

Try running this past your vet.  I hope it helps and your kitty gets better.

I wonder if IBD is called that there? What antibiotics is he on? Sulfasalazine or metronidazole? Is the anti-inflammatory a steroid, such as prednizolone?
B-12 is given to IBD kitties who have B-12 deficiency....
Not sure if you have access there, but there is a good test called LPI (I think)- this can give you a good idea if this could be a pancreatitis problem...
How is his blood test?
I am typing this from my phone, so I can read the original post anymore- does he throw up or have diarrhea?
:hugs::vibes:
