4 month old kitten doesn't eat on her own

Hello!

The only time my kitten eats if I put some food in front of her. When she is in the bathroom, I do not think she eats. (I keep her in one room until she gets adjusted) Is it because she is in a new environment?

Hello smile.gif..... Congratulations on your new kitten biggrin.gif!!!! How old is the kitten? Was she from a shelter? If she will eat with you in the room, then I would just schedule her daily wet food feeding's and sit in there while she eats. She is absolutely adjusting to her new home and probably is a bit stressed and feesl comfort when you are near. Just makes sure the kitten DOES eat. She must not go a day without food, then a vet visit is in order. You can leave some kitten dry food for her when you are away or not in the room with her. I bet in a few day's, she will be better adjusted and start eating in your absence. Try to spend loads and loads of time with her and that will help her start to feel safe and secure. TOYS TOYS TOYS too biggrin.gif Kitten's love to play. If she is not wanting to play, or stop's eating then she might be getting an upper respiratory infection which is common in kittens, especially shelter kittens. Keep us posted agree.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

Hello Feralvr!

Jasmine is four months and yes she did come from an animal shelter. I have been making sure that she is eating daily. Today I seen her her eating her dry food without me around!love.gif When she sees one of the kids or myself or my husband walking past her she runs. I think she is just soooo sweet. She also got spayed on Dec 26. Do you know how long it takes to heal?Thank you for the advice!biggthumpup.gifwave2.gif

It will take at least a week or two for her to be back to her old self.  The only word one can use for cats is patience!  Many of them just take a long time to adjust.  But your kitty is young, so pretty soon, she'll be a full member of the family.  Just take your cues from her - if she's not in the mood, don't force her.

She'll hide or run until she's comfortable and the best thing you can do to help her adjust is be patient.  Thanks for adopting her.

Pretty name, Jasmine heartpump.gif !!!! As Ondine says, it will take about ten day's for her to recover. Kitten's recover pretty quickly and without any complications from their spay's. Since it has been already seven day's since her spay, she should be just fine now to play and romp around. It will take her a little bit of time for her to feel totally comfortable and safe in her new, loving heartpump.gif home. A good friend has some great advice, she always says "Turn off your clock" when it comes to kitten's/cat's adjusting to a new environment. Just enjoy each day with her and you will soon see small step's towards her feeling more relaxed. When you start to let her out of her "safe" room. Let her come out on her own. Most times they will come out a few feet or into the next room, but then will dash 3a.gif back to their "safe" room. IF she is very confident - she will venture further. But keep that room available to her at all times. Don't take away that litter box - and keep her room the same. It will be fun for you to see what kind of personality she will have - they can be so different and just have no expectations.... there are some kitten's/cat's that are just naturally more shy and reserved than other kitten's/cat's. You will just have to see what kind of personality she will have. My Walden for example, is VERY easy-going, won't even move for the vacuum cleaner. Whereas, Perkin's will take off running at the first sight of the vacuum cleaner. Pipsqueak LOVES other people and will greet any stranger with confidence. Perkin's and Perla head for the hill's when anyone comes over. AND Perkin's will still dart off if my DH tries to pet him. He really prefer's "head bumping" to show affection and not hand petting. laughing02.gif I just love the fact that all of my cat's are SO different. They truly are individual's - each their own cat bluelaugh.gif. Enjoy your little Jasmine - she will grow quickly. OOOOOOoooooo I just LOVE the little kitten's. Pictures camera.gif if you can. clap.gifclap.gifclap.gifclap.gif

A lot of us have L-Lysine on hand for our kitties to give in case you notice the sniffle's/URI's. Here is the brand I use..http://www.netrition.com/now_lysine_page.html. You can also get it on Amazon. Very inexpensive and easily taken by kitten's. It is a powder and has no bitter taste. It is easily mixed in wet food for easy dosing. For a kitten - you would only give 250 mg. (1/8/tsp) once daily, you can give this twice daily if the kitten is over six month's. Full grown - we give out cat's 500 mg. (1/4 tsp) twice daily for five day's then go to the maintenance dose 250 mg. (1/8 tsp.) once or twice daily. It work's very, very well for kitties starting with the sniffles and sneezes. Just good to have on hand. biggrin.gif;)

She ate when you were around, but did run when others of your family were coming?  I suspect she felt nervous with the others, but felt confident together with you.  You being her Mummy - and protection.  So the only real safe moments for her, to eat, was when she had the protection from you.

But now since some days you tell she ates also when you are nt present.  Apparently she is coming to feeling more security in yours - and her home.   :)

Congrats!

happy2.gifheartpump.gif OH be still my beating heart laughing02.gif Jasmine IS the cutest little doll EVER...... I have a real soft spot for (yes, I am going to say the color....rofl.gif) Orange and White kitties clap.gifclap.gifclap.gif I am very, very glad to hear she is doing well. I do know that awful feeling when you can't find the baby..... Under the bed is a favorite spot to hide. And just in case, check under the box frame to see if the material is loose because she could climb up into the box spring. Just be aware just in case you can't find her even if you look under the bed. Check for a hole in that material that covers the springs. My cat's have torn many holes and love to play and sometimes nap in there. It is like a little hammock now for them laughing02.gif Thank you for the update and posting camera.gif. Keep 'em coming clap.gifclap.gifbiggrin.gif

Thanks you guys! wink.gifwink.gif I checked under the box frame, yes there is a little tear there. catman.gifSo I guess sooner or later I will find her there! lol2.giflol2.gif Sometimes I catch Jasmine running towards my room and then when she sees me she goes back to her safe room. It is just sooo funny! Today she was out of her safe room all day. She was just sniffing everything. I guess she is finally getting comfortable with everyone in my house. Especially with my two daughters.hearthrob.gifheartpump.gif  I just love her eyes! She got a hint of green in them.love.gif I will try to get a perfect pic of her eyes soon!

love.gif Jasmine DOES have beautiful eyes - oh MY heartpump.gif Isn't is just too cute when they decide to sneak out of their safe room's and snoop around, then all of the sudden something might confuse them or startle them and they 3a.gif back to their room. I love it. You will find in the day's to come that eventually she won't be in her safe room much at all. But make sure you keep her room available to her for quite some time, if not forever laughing02.gif My cat's all were kept in my "foster" room for a time and now they all have the run of the house - but I still have that room open and I have two cat pans available in that room for them to choose to use as well as the other four pans I have downstairs. I just never took away the access to that room and that cat pan. Soon- Jasmine will be coming out more and more and it is great that she is adjusting to the whole family too. biggrin.gif Much fun is headed your way and I am sure Jasmine will entertain you all to no end bluelaugh.gifclap.gif

Jasmine is something else!! laughing02.giflaughing02.gif I think she is starting to know her name since I say it all the time. This morning she tore the shower curtains, last night she was diving under newspaper like she was swimming!! biggrin.gif  few days before she ripped the tissue up that was in the bathroom. I found out that she just loves newspaper and boxes. PICT0102.JPG

Here she is hiding after she tore up the tissue and was playing with the rug!

I was sooo happy when I took this picture. Jasmine was just yawning.

Wonderful pics, wonderful news!

Her playing such a lot, making even some "mischief" is showing clearly she is not stressed nor much afraid any longer, now at least she feel at home.     :)

Good luck!
