conjunctivitis question..

Hi all.

A week ago tonight, I took Cassie in for irritated eye. The vet said she has a virus.. in her eye. She gave me eye antibiotic ointment to apply twice a day. This I've been doing, though I missed 2 dosages since I was away over night for Christmas.

Some parts of the day, her eye looks almost normal. But it seems at night, it gets watery after applying ointment.. the watery eye started yesterday. It wasn't watery before yesterday. Seems to be irritated and red more at nights. It's no longer gunky (a smidge, hardly noticable yellow gunk)

The vet told me to use the ointment 2x a day for 2 weeks. But her eye doesn't appear to be improving (unless watery eye is an improvement?), nor does it appear to be getting worse. the same. Since the vet made it clear to use the ointment for 2 weeks, I am unsure about bringing her back in before time's up (as regular human doctors wouldn't recommend you coming back in while you're still on antibiotics unless you took a turn for the worse).

This is the first time I am dealing with this. I was wondering if anyone can offer advice or experiences in regards to this? How long did it take for your cat's eye to clear up? Did you do anything else, home remedy wise?

vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif For Cassie's eye... I would continue for the two week's and since you missed a couple of dosages, then add that to the time period. As long as the eye is running clear - then keep on with the ointment. IF the eye is getting gunky and having a greenish discharge - then bring her back to the vet for a different eye ointment/drops. I usually have great luck with NEO/POLY/DEX. as it contains a steroid as well. Of course, this is ONLY given by the vet's. You must never use a steroid in an eye infection if there is a scratch. BUT if it is just a viral eye infection, then it work's quite well. It can take well over a week for eye infections to even start to clear. So hang on and keep up with that ointment.... Cassie's eye should start improving within seven to ten days. AND if it has been one week tonight and you missed two dosages, then she has only had the ointment for six day's..... wink.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

It seems to me that you DO notice some improvement, since you say it's no longer gunky.  To me, that would be a big improvement, or are you saying that the gunk was originally just a smidge?

Anyway, I have to say that I admire anyone who can get eye ointment into their cat's eye!  highfive.gif  Luckily, I've never had to do that, and hopefully I never will laughing02.gif

Also, I agree with Lauren that I would continue with the 2 weeks (plus that extra missed day), unless you see it get worse.

guess you are right about the gunk!

The trick with Cassie to get the ointment in.. I cannot hold her. She has to be comfortably sitting and she'd let me put it in her eye.. if I hold her, she'd freak out!
