we were thinking of building Ella a cat house for the inside of our house out of wood and making it homey for her. have any of you built one? if so what things did you use to build it. for the roof of her house i was thinking of putting something on it where she can scratch it.? any ideas of what i can use for the inside? would painting it be a good idea since the paint is pretty strong? thank you for your help

I found the text in this book spot on, but the illustrations aren't helpful at all. Good over all book

This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

This scoop was a freebie with some clumping litter I bought last year, and I like it so much that I've bought a second one. It's perfect for fine clumping litter, which it sifts very thoroughly....

Do you want to do an outdoor cat enclosure, where the cat is fenced in but able to enjoy the outside, or something more like a little house where she can have shelter when you are't home (if she's an outdoor/indoor cat). If it's just a cat enclosure, you can make them cheaply enough with sturdy stakes and chicken wire (use that for the roof too, unless it's in a sunny place and she needs some shade). If it's an actual "house" you want, you have to think about durability. The walls can be made of wood but the roof should have shingles to protect from the elements so it won't be as cheap. Let us know what exactly you are thinking of so we can help more.
BTW, how is she doing?

Since it doesn't have to be weatherproof, you can go wild! Glue sisal rope or carpet to the roof, put a catnip or wheat grass planter in the window, etc. Just have fun with whatever you can think of creatively.A cat tree would probably be used more. Just a thought.

Sorry, I completely missed the "inside of our house" part. So you want to do like a cat tree type thing, only in house style, kind of like a place she can get away to? There are quite a few members here that built their own cat trees and you should be able to use the same materials. Lot's of carpet remenants and spare fabric. Are you planning on putting shelves up so Ella can lay on them? The remenants are great for that because you can usually get them cheap so replacing them is pretty easy.
DH said if you are using wood, use untreated wood. As for the ceiling, you could just use cardboard and change it out every now and then. You could also put in a scratching post using a heavy cardboard tube (check out a surplus store for this) and wrapping it in heavy woven rope (sicsle?).
Sounds great for Ella and I can tell she's going to be a spoiled kitty!
(Side note: I'm glad her urine looks clearer now. I've noticed that with some kittens myself. How old is Ella? If she has just been weaned that may have been what caused it. We notice that sometimes with kittens and it's usually around the time when they switch from momma's milk to solid food. We usually give it a week or so and it clears up and they are fine but take her to the vet for her check up just in case).
