please help--multicat household and urination issues when leaving for a day or two

I really need some help in this situation...Ive had cats for years-- two cats..tehy are well behaved etc and I could leave them alone in the house for days to a week..with no issues. However, recently a friend of mine had three kittens and couldnt keep them and gave them all to me. Ive had them for 6 months now- so I have 5 cats total- for one person living alone its been hard but doable. I have four females and one male--kitten... the male used to urinate 'sometimes' on the couch--- however when I leave them unattended for even ONE night-- the kittens freak out and one or two urinate on the couch or anywhere. I left yesterday to go spend xmas out of town and came back today... I knew it would be bad but it was worse than I expected--one or two of the cats had urinated and defecated ALL over the bed in the guest bedroom--this is my parents bedroom technically though they dont live there and it was disgusting... I love these cats but its just too much for me to deal with. I'm not sure if they urinated other places too as the entire house just reeks horribly. I had to dispose of the sheets comforter as it was full of urine...what can a person do in this situation if they have to go out of town even for a night?? I have no one I can trust to come look after them and even that wouldn't stop all this---do you have to lock them up in a cage, the bathroom?? are there any ideas on how to deal with this?? if you go out of town what can you do about animals like these?

I dont have the money to spend on boarders, i dont trust random pet sitters.... and if I want to spend new years eve with a friedn out of town i have no clue what to do? My two older cats are fine and one of the kittens is ok...but the other two are the urination culprits...and they urinated all over this bed and someone defecated on it too.... also my parents own the house and have been nagging at me to get rid of the cats...and thraetening and warning me-- at this point... I had till january 1st, and now after this....theres nothing i can say to them....the entire bed is destroyed...and if I locked all the bedrooms they would have ruined the couch.... is there anything a person can do in dealing with this when going out of town? I dont want to just leave them outside in my backyard but i really dont or cant imagine leaving them indoors again unless theyre in a cage...is a cage ok? or will they urinate everywhere in the cage too? the bathroom? this is so confusing...it seems anywhere I leave them they WILL destroy the place...and there seems to be no options...anyone who has any advice please help..!

How many litter boxes do you have?

Have the supposed culprits been to the vet for a check-up? Are they neutered?

Do all the cats get along or is there any tension in their relationship?

Locking them in a cage while you're gone would be cruel, as would dumping them outside. What about closing all the bedroom doors and covering the couch in a big sheet of poly? Making sure you have lots of easily accessible litter boxes around could also help. I would pick up a couple of Feliway diffusers as well.

Have they been to a vet to rule out health problems?

One of the first things you're going to have to do is make sure the urine is cleaned up properly to prevent a recurrence. TCS has a couple of articles on how to do that:

Forgot to mention: you'll need to clean the urine stains with a good enzymatic cleaner (I like Urine Off, but there are other good ones available). You can use a black light in the dark to find all the places the cats have peed, and then give them a good soaking with the cleaner. Otherwise they'll continue to smell the urine and keep using those spots.

Hi, Shhann! Welcome to TCS! wavey.gif

How many litter boxes do you have? The recommendation is one for each cat, plus one. Where are they and how big are they? They can't be side by side, there should be at least one per floor, bigger is better (many of us multi-cat owners use giant storage boxes from Home Depot and the like) and uncovered is better than covered. Finally, how often are they cleaned? Some cats are really picky about their litter boxes and won't use a dirty box.

Are there any issues between the cats? If there are too few litter boxes, aggressive cats could be either keeping those two kittens out of the boxes, or harassing them while they're in there, forcing them to "go" elsewhere.

Good luck!!!!! Improper elimination is likely THE toughest cat problem one can have. heartpump.gif
