My cat is around three and a half years old and had fleas for the first time about 10 weeks ago. She was treated with flea cream and I havent seen any since. But she is showing severals things that I feel are a cause for concern and im really not sure if it can be blamed on the fleas. The signs she is showing remind me of signs of old age, but she is far from it.

She has many rough spots on her neck, which I call barbs because they remind me of the spiky plants that stick to your clothes. She is losing hair on her back right above her tail. It is very dry and itchy and she will pur if you stroke her fur in that spot.

Ive also noticed she has lost alot of hair in her back two legs. They look very slimmed down and almost malnurished.

She has always been very fond of grooming. If you pet her even for a few seconds she will reclean her entire coat. But lately it has been more excessive than usual.

Is this the kind of thing that can be fixed by purchasing over-the-counter products in pet stores, or does it sound serious enough to warrant a trip to the vet

I would definitely recommend a trip to the vet.

What was the anti-flea preparat?  I suspect you did buyed this "too" over the count at the pet store?

The problem is, many of these otc anti-fleas are rather poisonous for cats.

Nowadays there are some good stuff which got prescription free (Revolution for example), but I dont think it is in cream form...  so with some luck or unluck - this otc antiflea could be the reason, or at least, the drop which got the cup to overflow...

Anyway, unless somebody comes with an excellent and highly probable answer - go to the vet with her. Asap.

She deserves it.

Good luck!   *vibes*

It sounds serious enough for a vet visit. This could be a flea allergy,an  allergy to the cream you used, food allergy, a number of things. You need to have your vet to help you sort it out or you could end up prolonging what is wrong by treating something that is not it.

Let us know how things go.  :)

I, too, recommend a vet visit.

It could be a number of things, allergic reaction to the fleas or flea product, stress, a non-related skin disease, a non-skin disease that has these symptoms, really anything.

Only a vet can say for sure what it is, and maybe even to a blood test to be sure.

Good luck!
