A vaccination for HIV has been approved for the first phase of human clinical trial, backed by the FDA.

Quote:

The vaccine, SAV001, will now have to undergo three phases of human clinical trials;

  • Phase 1. Beginning in January 2012, this phase will involve 30 HIV-positive people on whom safety will be retested.
  • Phase 2. This phase will examine immune responses in humans and will involve 600 HIV-negative people who are at high risk of contracting the AIDS virus.

Phase 3. This phase will determine the efficacy of the vaccine and will involve 6,000 HIV-negative volunteers at high risk of contracting the virus.

 Thoughts?

I get that vaccines need to be fully tested before being offered to everyone but I dont get it, I dont understand where and who will get tested because who would offer to possibly contract the disease unless I have missed something

Vaccines are not made of live viruses. They are dead.  You can't get the disease from a dead virus.  The idea behind vaccinations is to stimulate the body into response, because the body doesn't care if it is dead or alive, to build up antibodies against "the invaders".

Here is from the article:

"the vaccine, which is based on a genetically modified killed whole virus."

Of course they can't test it like they do with animal vaccines (by exposing a vaccinated animal to the live virus), so what they do with human vaccines is to find a high-risk group (for HIV, say, promiscuous young gay men), those who have a fairly high chance of contracting HIV anyway, and see if fewer of the vaccinated group contract HIV than those who are unvaccinated. It's really not the greatest way to do it, but you can't go around deliberately exposing humans to deadly diseases so it's the best you can do.

Well, I hope it works. Without too many serious side effects.

Hear hear. It's horrid. My sister's ex-husband's mom died from it. The day it's gone (if ever) no one will miss it

Also, a lot of the clinical trials and tests pay VERY well. My uncle was approached to be in a clinical trial for his knee and, if accepted, will be paid almost $2000/wk. Of course, he would have to relocate to a different state where the cost of living more, but still I could live off $2000/wk easily!
