Hello everyone,
I am new to the site but have some pressing concerns regarding my beloved kitty Angelica that I'm hoping you all can shed some light on.
She is roughly 12 years old. About a year and a half ago routine blood work showed slightly elevated liver enzymes. It was in the midst of a stressful move so we waited a few months to let the stress calm down before checking again. When she was rechecked her ALT and alkaline phosphotase were both very elevated. An abdominal ultrasound was done to check the liver and all looked perfect. She began taking Denamarin and was re-checked, one level (can't remember which one) was lowered into normal range but one was not. So, we switched to Actigall and have been rechecking with some progress but the last blood test showed that the alkaline phosphotase was once again going up.
About a week ago my vet added Denamarin to her treatment regime. Angelica received the Denamarin 1 hr before dinner, then received the Actigall with dinner. Within a day she started not being very interested in her food and seemed to not feel very well. After 3 days this has not changed. She is eating but not as interested in her food, does not finish her bowl as she normally does, and generally just seems to not be feeling 100%.
I've been in touch with her vet who advised me to stop both medications for two days to give her a break and then to resume her treatment with the Actigall in the morning and the Denamarin in the evening.
What are your thoughts? Until now she has been doing quite well, you wouldn't have really known there was a problem without the blood work. She had zero side effects from the Denamarin when she took it alone nor did she have any side effects with the Actigall when she took it alone.
What can I do to encourage her to eat? Any other thoughts on managing her liver problems since there doesn't appear to be any other underlying issue (cancer, etc)?
Thank you so much. Angelica means the world to me and I want to do whatever I can to help her.
All my best,
Cheryl
