We were at the winery on Saturday morning and there was a "Free Kitty" sign in the door as we walked out. And when we got outside, there s/he was....a little grey, long-haired kitten. I picked it up and its fur was all matted. When I looked at its face, its eyes were matted shut. But it purred. That baby purred. And then the  tears came....I started crying right then and there. Rick was furious, just furious. And you know, I don't blame him. We have seven and honestly? I cannot afford eight. I simply cannot. The lady at the winery said that somebody just dumped it off. And they were not going to keep it or care for it.

But the little one stayed in my mind. On Sunday I talked to my sister. It turns out that we're both coming into a bit of money....not a lot, about $1,200, which we're splitting. We decided to spend it on the little kitty for the vet care it needs. And after it's tested, de-wormed, de-fleaed and all that good stuff, we'll start calling no-kill shelters to see if one will take it. We'll donate whatever is left of the money from the vet bill to the shelter to help with its care. We were hoping that somebody else would take the kitten, but I told my sister right out that sometimes I just don't have a lot of faith in humanity.

So my sister and I went over last night, looking for the kitten. We found food and straw for a bed outside. But no kitten. And no sign in the door. She's going to call the winery today and see what happened to the kitten. We think they should just clean it up and have it checked out and then call it Shine (for moon shine....well, we know that moonshine isn't a wine, but it's still kind of a neat name). And that could be the winery's kitty. That's what I'd do...it's a good name for a kitty at a winery.

Anyway, if the kitten is still there, we're going back over tonight to get it and take it to the hospital for care. I cannot bring in another kitten; Rick absolutely forbids it. And remember when we brought Tabby in; WWIII erupted in the house for several days before he fell in love with Tabs.

Even a shelter is better than no home at all. That's what I think. And if the kitten checks out OK and gets cleaned up, it would be a beautiful long-haired baby. Please keep us in your thoughts that we can find the little kitten and that it will check out OK at the vet. (And that Rick doesn't completely flip out if the little one ends up in our computer room for awhile!)

Happy ending to this story. My sister called the winery this morning. It turns out that a girl saw the kitten and decided to take it home and care for it; that's why we couldn't find it last night. So the little grey girl/boy did get a home.

Pam, you really are a wonderful person.  Even though we've never met in person (one of these days - on a cruise?) --- we've been on-line with bulletin boards and phone calls for quite a few years now ----  I feel I know you pretty well.     I'm so glad the kitty found a good home,  and you were so wonderful to offer your help and money.     I know you really don't need eight cats now, but remember when you didn't need six and then  you didn't need seven?     Rick may get angry but I bet that deep down he wants them just as much as you do.

Pam, what a wonderful ending to the story! You have such a big heart, as do Rick and your sister! I HATE seeing kittens in that condition when they can't even get their eyes opened! And the winery wasn't going to do anything?? At least they could have wiped the eyes out with warm water and gotten all the matted stuff out. THAT wouldn't have cost them any money and a few minutes of their time. Yes, they probably would gotten matted again the next night if didn't put anything in them, but at least he could see for a while!

At least the kitty (hopefully) went to a good home with someone that knows how to care for it.

Right here! :)
What a great ending to that sad story! It is so great that you and your sister were going to help that little kitten! I feared a sad ending, when reading that you couldn't find the kitten, what   a relieve that someone took the kitten to care for it!  I really hope it has found a really good home, it needs that! :)

I'm glad the kitty found a home. As to the original question of whether a shelter is better than no home.....absolutely!  In a shelter they will have a dry bed, shelter from the elements and a steady source of food. That is more than a homeless kitty could ever imagine. And a shelter is their absolute best chance of finding their forever home....way more people visit shelters than will visit your living room so it's odds increase.

Thanks, guys. But you would have all done the same thing.....and a lot quicker than my sister and I did. We never went to look for the kitten until Monday night and, by that time, it was gone anyway.

I was going to go back inside on Saturday morning and ask for warm water and tissues or something to try to clean the kitten's eyes out. Especially since it was so friendly and it seemed trusting. Rick wanted nothing to do with it. Not that that makes him a bad person; he's just scared to death that another kitty is going to end up in the computer room....and then in the house forever. And even my sister stopped and thought about it because she remembers the terrible time with Tabby's ears and the infections and such. But well, I just couldn't get it out of my mind and after I told my sister, we decided that we needed to go get it.

Hopefully the kitten has a good home with lots of love and kindness.
