Showing aggressive possession over new toy

My sister gave me a interactive cat toy that she had bought for her cat because her cat was only watching it and wasn't playing with it. She figured it cost too much just to be watched so she gave it to me for Chacho.

Good news, Chacho loves it! Bad news is that he's pretty possessive over the feather lure.  I'm not sure what the toy is called but Panic Mouse has pretty much the same toy but the one we have is brown and has a feather lure and the little round part on the lure is a lot smaller.

The toy we have has been made to be detachable, which I know the logic behind it. Its so you can buy different lures for it or replace the wand if it brakes OR if you have a cat who plays rough, so instead of breaking it, the cat just detaches parts to it.

Anyways, the problem is Chacho absolutely is gaga over it and quickly detaches it as soon as he can catch it and imediantly runs off with it under the table, if I try to take it from him, he growls and spits at me. I took video of it but I didn't have time to upload it to youtube before work so I could post the video as well.  At this point he's only growling and runs away from me, when I do finally catch him, I can grab him but to actually get the feather lure out of his mouth, I have to slide him between my legs so I can use both hands to literally pry open his mouth because he's clamped down so hard on it. I hate forcing his mouth open because I'm afraid I'll hurt him...or he'll lash out at him. After I get it away from him, he's back to his normal happy, playful self, begging for me to play with him.  I just can't beleive how possessive he is over this feather lure!

Is this something I should be worried about? Is there another solution besides just putting toy up for good and not letting him play with it again?

First of all, just in case someone doesn't realize, a toy like that should never be left out for unsupervised play, that string bit is very dangerous.

You can try letting him keep it until he loses interest and drops it, rather than taking it away from him, that may reduce his possessiveness somewhat.

Queen Eva is possessive of her Furry Balls, even though none of the other cats have ever shown any interest in them. When she plays with them she growls and growls, and if another cat dares look at her she snorts and hisses.laughing02.gif

It always surprises me when one of my cats gets possessive like that over one of the toys. My (OTB) Max loved the little nerf golf balls, and my (OTB) Bogart loved the rabbit fur mice. Both cats were highly friendly to other cats (Bogart was my house ambassador to new cats for years), but give them a certain toy, and they became growling hissing machines. My only advice would be to only bring the toy out under supervision and limit the time he spends with it. The toy is prompting his instinctual prey drive and there's not much you can do to stop it.
