Hello everyone
It's been a while, I haven't been on here a whole lot lately and I'm back with a totally random thread...

What type of haircut do you usually ask for when you get your hair trimmed?

My hair has been growing out and I am not sure if I should get layers or not. Also, I feel like the most important part of a hair cut is the way it frames your face. Right now, I have long layers and around my face my hair just goes straight down, and it's really boring and dull. My hair is curly, so doing crazy choppy layers at the front doesn't really work for me, although I love that type of look.  I still need it to be more interesting than what it is now. I also still want to keep it long....Any suggestions? Every time I go to the salon, and they ask me what kind of haircut I want I just don't know what to say

The secret to living with curly hair is to find a stylist that understands curly hair and knows how to cut it.  Believe it or not, not all hairstylists do.  Curly hair needs to be cut in a certain way, otherwise the cut ends work against the curls and cause hair to stick up and go in a direction it isn't meant to.  From what I understand the cut needs to be in the direction of the curl for it to have that soft curl look.

A girl a work has long curly hair and it's gorgeous, and she attributes it to her styist knowing how to cut curly hair.  I have semi curly hair, meaning it's not symetrical, but I tend to keep it shorter because I can't stand it sticking up all over the place in what appears to be cowl licks.   She given me her stylist's number. I keep meaning to make an appointment.

I agree, I have curly hair. I went to a new hairdresser. I was wondering why he was insisting on straightening my hair. After I washed all the product out of,my hair, I have a total disaster. It has been 4 months my hair still sticks up everywhere. I have to grow it out a bit more before I can get it restyled. Since my stylist moved I haven't been able to find someone who knows how to cut my difficult hair :(

I have curly hair as well and have been through hair cut hell. The biggest problem is that everyone's  curls are different so it's pretty much all about the stylist. If one ever pulls out a razor or a straightener...run and don't look back.

My suggestion is that you stop someone on the street that has hair that you like and ask them where they get it done. It's really a word of mouth thing. I used to get my hair cut in what looked like a warehouse...but man she was the best!

I'm working with a new stylist now and although my first cut leaves much to be desired she understands curly and I think we can work out the kinks (lol)

My hair is mostly random layers because if I get distinct layers (like straight-haired people) then I get some really hideous ledges. The top layers also need to be quite short for me because they drag down and the back lower layer needs to be a bit shorter because it doesn't curl as well.

Try naturallycurly.com for some ideas too. They also have a listing of stylists.

My hair has been all over the map. My natural hair loose curly. I had it chemically straightened when I lived in Korea, and for about 1.5 years my hair was stick straight with no poof or fuzz at all. I've had lengths from short pixie to half way down my back. I always think I want short hair and when I cut it I ALWAYS regret it
I just cut it to my shoulders (from half way down my back) and regret it already - it poufs EVERYWHERE! But I agree with finding a hairdresser who understands curly hair. Some just try to razor it really thin, which does not work
