Cat Stroke - 14 yr old

Thread Starter

Hi All,

I have a 14 yr old cat, a few minutes ago, he acted very rare, he was taking his front leg to his  head (like if he would bath himself)  and he could not stand in his back legs.

In general he is  a very stressed cat and taking him to the vet will not amuse him, needless to say that the vet where I live (greek island) is terrible... and I am affraid to stress him more.

After about 10 minutes he regain coordination but I can see his back legs are still a bit weak / lack of coordination...

Has anyone experienced anything like this ?

Thanks !

It's been about 6 hours (sorry, just noticed this). Is he doing any better?

It doesn't sound like a stroke. Strokes typically occur on either their left or right sides, and not front to back. Some of the things that a cat will do after a stroke is to tilt their head to one side, walk in circles, drool, and limp. If his back legs are weak, its more likely a thrombosis, which is a blood clot between his legs and his heart. The clot slows blood flow and makes their back legs very weak. A thrombosis indicates a heart condition and there are some medications you can give for this. Depending on the severity of the problem, they may or may not help.

I've had cats with both conditions. There's not much than a vet can do for a stroke, other than giving you ideas on how to manage any permanent paralysis. You might be able to get meds if it is a thrombosis. He really does need to see a vet.

I agree, it does sound like a thrombosis rather than stroke, but only a Vet would be able to tell for sure. Is your cat in pain?  You might want to re-post with a new thread title (using Thrombosis versus Stroke) to see if you get more replies, but I would definitely get him in to the Vet sooner than later!  vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif
