My cat has hyperthyroidism

Thread Starter

My cat was diagnoised with hyperthyroidism. It took gosh no how many times to get the right level of meds.

Now about 4 days ago she quit eating all she does is sleep and not drinking.

I've taken her in about once every week for a yr. and now once every few months and now it was going to be not for another 6 months because she was on track with her blood work.

All of a sudden she does not want to eat, drink and just sleep and she normally wakes me up to eat in the morning . and has to be fed at a certain time.

I'm at my wits end and don't want to torcher her.

Hi there, sorry you are going through this.... please make sure she eats... it is really important.... Have you ran a complete blood test lately? A super-chem/senior panel, not only a T-4 check? Something might be going on that might be preventing her to eat..... With my kitty, it was the liver.... It can happen with methimazole, and yes, it will knock down the appetite.... She could also gone Hypo-T, which could explain the lack of appetite, and somewhat the lack of energy.... How much Methimazole is she taking?
What does she eat? How much and how often? How are her numbers? How do you feed her? Have you tried to blend her food into a pate? Spoon-feeding? Anything else going on? Is she losing weight? Losing hair? coughing? Anything out of the ordinary? How long has she been off her appetite? vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

Hi there,

We just got her medication on trasmile.gifck and her levels perfect.

This was not even a week ago. Next thing I know My little Princess who loves her wet food won't touch her food . Well yesterday she ate some . I put the meds in it and it was like she could smell it so I gave her a different bowl with just a little and it was like a kid who's sick a few bites and walked away. Water for 2 days she just would not drink than yesterday went and looked at it. And last night drank a few sips. Today back to square 2 she eats a few bites looks at the water then drinks a few sips.

I'm out on Workers comp. with no one to help me and I have not a penny to take her in for test till the 28th. The vet will only do the test if I pay for it then. So she is made comfy and I asked if I could get an advance on the workers comp.

She was 3 lbs and pregnant when she showed up at my door and is my pride and joy. Her and I have had a special bond and I can tell when things are not right with her. I refuse to put her down the road of torture. She's been up and down this every week to every other week for over a yr. since we could not get things right with her Thyroid and she also has whats called Macra bowel and that is when it backs up and they have to go and clean it out. At 7 yrs. she's only 6 lbs. maybe less now.

Thanks so much.

It's such a tough deasease for them to have to deal with . She is going through so much and now is not taking her meds because she gets sick.

I can't force them on her if this is the end of her days here. She's my pride and joy and I have to think of her.

When she started not eating the wet food and or just taking a few bites finally I new that was it. Now when she pee's it's not as much and for 6 lbs she pee's like a horse. LOL.

That's when I knew something was wrong. At least she is back to sleeping with mom.

vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif For you little princess rub.gifrub.gif Please keep us updated on her. I know it is so hard (and expensive) when they get sick xeye.gif. There is something called "Care Credit" that many people have used to be able to get medical care for their cat's right away. I am lucky in that my vet will allow me to make payment's. Although, we have a long standing relationship of twenty years now. I wish you the best with your furbaby vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

Hi, Carolscats. Welcome to TCS! I'm terribly sorry it's under these conditions. hugs.gif

I have no advice or help in regards your sweet kitty's disease. I can, however, offer some tips for encouraging cats to eat. Maybe one of them will do the trick for your girl.

Warm the food by mixing it with warm water (don't microwave it), or sprinkle catnip, Parmesan Cheese, Forti Flora flakes, fish food flakes (weird, but it works), or some crumbled up freeze-dried meat treats (Whole Life's chicken works wonderfully on my kitties!) over the food.

You can also drip a bit of tuna juice or sprinkle crushed up Temptation treats over it. (Be aware, both are unhealthy if given daily over the long term, and both can be a bit addictive if not carefully watched.)

Another trick I recently learned about - offer your cat something you know she doesn't like. Then, after she turns her nose up, take it away and offer her what she likes to eat, maybe even sprinkled already with something enticing.

My heart goes out to you. I hope she starts eating well again soon!! heartpump.gif
