Shredding toilet paper...

My cat Navi has a bad problem shredding toilet paper. The way the bathroom is set up does not allow for me to put it in a cabinet and her litter box is in the bathroom so I cant shut her out.

Ive gone through multiple different sites looking for solutions, a lot are the same "hide the roll, lock her out" answers. I did find someone who had the great idea of making a little cover out of a tupperwear container and fixing it over the roll on the wall.

That lead me to this solution as a temporary fix. I wandered walmart for about an hour looking at different boxes to use since they didnt have the same container the person used in the post. In the area where all the school supplies are they had a cute little box for organizing cd's. perfect size, came in a few colors, and only a few dollars. I cut the bottom out, took out the inserts that held the cd's (they just popped right out) and attached it to the wall over the roll holder.  2011-12-15_20-50-42_410.jpg  2011-12-15_20-51-27_86.jpg

So far so good, but i would love some advice if anyone is able to offer better solutions, as i would prefer not to have to cover it at all.

Is this something she will maybe grow out of? shes not even a year old so shes still into everything.

I would love any feedback! ^_^

Thanks!

What a clever solution! She may or may not grow out of it. Some do, some don't. But that looks very nice and tidy and stylish.

And hygienic. Think about this, since you keep the litter box in the bathroom....all that litter dust is settling on the TP roll every time she uses the box.laughing02.gif

I use the Feline pine litter, clumping not the pellets, does that still have dust like the regular clay litter does?

Oh! I don't really know. So maybe your TP is safe from dust.

However I still think it looks really cool. smile.gif I love the little hinged door.

I just leave the roll sitting on the side of the sink.

My cats love to shred paper towels or toilet paper, so a few times a month I give them each a roll and let them have at it. It keeps them happy and they leave my roll of paper on the sink alone.

LOL that is so bandit. And no, he doesnt get  better I don't see it happening- something intruguing about disposable papers on rolls... just lures some cats. lol

Just a little suggestion, but it has worked in the past for us.

If you put the paper the other way around, with the paper coming out under the roll, and always leave the end on top of the roll, that eliminates one "attraction" to the cat.

But I like your solution.  I suspect if you had a similar box, but put the side, rather than the bottom, against the wall, with the opening up, you could probably leave the top off, since your cat couldn't get at it easily.

Yeah, i tried that before unfortunately. I think her thing is for paper in general. i cant leave anything down that is paper. mail, receipts, paper towels. Ive tried putting it up on the sink counter as well, and she will (I'm assuming) climb up on the toilet, walk on top of her cat box (its one of the covered domes) and jump up on the counter. there's not really any space at all because of how small the bathroom is.

Ive tried alot of things to discipline her, and she thinks its funny. she actually kinda enjoyed getting squirted with water.

Just crossing my fingers that she will grow out of it

I wish I'd thought of that.  My TP has been hanging from the shower rod on a looped bungie cord for years.  laughing02.gif

As you've discovered, discipline doesn't really work on cats. They do better with distraction, positive reinforcement, and, if nothing else works, just keeping whatever it is the cat can't stay away from, out of reach of the cat. Which you have cleverly and attractively done. smile.gif

I have a paper shredder too, my Mazy cat. I give her big sheets of brown packing paper to shred to her heart's delight. She also enjoys using it as a fort, and for pouncing and diving in.

Also, you might try a low sided cardboard box with the flaps torn off, for Box Chewing. My Tolly rbheart.gif was my biggest Box Chewer, though Mazy enjoys it sometimes too.

Choke!! That's awesome!

Mko1988 - and anyone else with this problem - two more options to consider are 1) squeezing the roll before you hang it up so it doesn't roll smoothly (this would bug me, but it works for some) and 2) purchase a child-proof toilet paper roll cover (they can be found in the little kid's safety sections).

My cats don't bother my TP, but I've a very avid paper towel fan. I rarely forget to put the paper towels away when I'm done using them, but when I do, I pay for it. jaw-dropping.gif

Silly kitties. rolleyes02.gif

Do you have cardboard scratchers around your house, and do they use them? I always try to redirect them to a proper behavior before I give up and hide things away. I have determined cats also - they've trained me to use nothing but covered water glasses around here.

Your toilet paper cover is very cool btw. How clever!!

Good point! My cats love the cardboard scratchers, especially the s-curved ones. smile.gif

though it nearly as pretty as your solution, what worked for me was taking an empty roll (the brown card board part) and cutting it lengthwise once. it will coil on itself but all you need to do is open it back up and lay it on top of your roll. the curve will keep it there, it will cover most of the visible part of the roll and isn't easily pulled off by the cat. i have a hellian of a cat and this solved the problem. not the most attractive decor but it's effective, easy and cheap! good luck :)
