My Mom's brand new netbook was just hacked. She got a phone call from London from someone claiming to be tech support for Windows. They said there's an error in their registries regarding her computer and they asked for her IP address so they could get in. My Mom being half asleep (they called at 6 am) and not really computer savvy gave it to them. They then performed a fake scan of the computer to scare her and convince her that the computer was full off errors and viruses. By that time, they had full control of her computer and her mouse. Then they started deleting all her files and said she would have to pay $250 for them to recover everything and fix her computer. Fortunately, I was available so I came over and disconnected the router. They knew that they wouldn't get anything else out of her so they immediately hung up.
Be careful! NEVER give anyone your IP address and don't believe anyone who calls from a number you don't recognize.
