Travel with an older cat

Hi -

I recently moved from NYC to LA.  I left my 16 yr old cat with a good friend...it took a couple of weeks but my cat is now warming up to my friend and seems happy.   I had the vet check her out and she's in pretty good shape for her age.  She gave me anit-depressants for her to take to travel out here...but getting a pill down her is next to impossible...she's a master of coughing them up.

My friend is going to fly with her next week.  She has a layover in Chicago.  But it's a long trip and my cat definitely freaks out when she travels...and I haven't even traveled with her this far.

Unfortunately LA and NY are just too far to do it any other way.  Should I be concerned that she will get so freaked out she'll have a heart attack?  My friend has also bonded with her - but I wonder if I should still be the one to fly with her?  Or would it be better to leave her in NY?  My vet initially told me re-homeing her may be worse, but reports back are that she's been pretty happy after an adjustment.

As much as I miss her - I just want to do what's best.  I'd be devastated if the travel over killed her.

Please help!  Thanks -

HB
