Ah, in Europe (read Sweden) there could be another way!   The PILL.   The same PILL as females got.  Works fine to calm them males down. In reality: studs.

Some says it increases the risk for kittens being hurt, so it is not recommended shortly before a mating.

Although they CAN mate although during the pill... If the female is in heat and willing.  If she isnt insisting they take it easy and let her alone!   :)

So the Pill is OK given into mouth as a pill. But I would advice against the pill given as a shot, an injection.  Its comfortably because one shot lasts 3 months, but there is some risk for side effects on the stud...  Sometimes it can get nasty....   So NO shots, but pill orally may be OK.  Especielly in a case like here, in a cat soon to be neutered, no mating planned.

But I understand in USA you dont use the Pill, it is more or less forbidden?

So this is info only for us foreigners.   :)

I do understand this info is "overkill", but old memories did come up.  And who knows?  Someone may have use for this knowledge.

Have heard of this Pill for cat's, but it is not well discussed/prescribed here in the states. I am sure it would help with a hormonal cat but most people just sterilize the cat. I wonder though, if breeder's of show cat's might know more about this Pill and it's benefit's or ill side effects. HMMMM will try to look into this. Would be good to know about it! biggrin.gifwavey.gif

I must add, the Pill isnt Remedy For Everything even in Sweden.   :)

Although the pill is quite often used here on females, as it is supposed to.

And sometimes on males, as said.

Long usage on females isnt not good - giving a higher risk for cancer with time.  Short use buying time is OK. Or if they do have intensive and often heat, taking forces out of the queen to be...  Some queens have almost constant heat if not helped.     Here The Pill is useful.

But if the main purpose is just to avoid pregnancy without plans for next litter - nay, go to the vet surgeon and do the spaying.

For males, as said, the pill given orally may be useful in shorter periods, but I advise strongly against  injections.

About helping them cool down. I know some breeders in Finland use vet prescribed antihistamines.  It is essentially anti-allergic medicines.

Why not?  these anti-allergic medicines are sometimes used as mild  calming medicines for humans, so why not on high strung studs?   :)

But of course - the first choice to try is of course Feliway.  If it works it is the best: no risk at all of any side-effects.

I have no idea what breeders do, or if their vets will prescribe progesterone off-label for breeding cats. But it's not readily available to pet owners in the U.S., in pill or injectable form, and I don't think most American cat owners know that such a product even exists. Maybe it would be a good thing if it was available. . .I've heard of cat owners in England using the injection until they can save up for the spay. . .at least it would prevent a litter, even if there are side effects. Or maybe it would be a bad thing, I don't really know.

We have a pill called Perlutex (medroxyprogesterone) available for female cats which is supposed to "delay" heat. You can give the pills for the cat and while she's on them she shouldn't go in heat, doesn't always work though. It doesn't act as a contraceptive however, just postpones the heat until the cat is not given the pills anymore. I haven't heard of it given to males, but I have heard of other pills given to them, don't know more about those though. It isn't recommended for a long term use.

There is an injection called Tardak (delmadinone acetate) for males which is supposed to calm their stud behavior for a month. It's not commonly used for cats so I don't know how effective it is.

And we also have the Suprelorin (deslorelin) implant which will make males and females sterile for 6-18months, after that they are able to breed normally again. Tomu had this before he was neutered. The implant was expensive but effective. We've had quite a broad discussion about this product in a finnish cat forum because it is still quite new over here. So far I haven't heard anything bad about it.

Both Tardak and Suprelorin are also used to treat prostate issues in cats and dogs.

Some breeders here use Ovarid, but I've never used that (I use acupressure on my girls)

Mixed reviews on the pill, my European girl was on it while with the breeder I think it was a monthly dose but may have been a small weekly dose

Superloin tends to last much longer in cats, over 24 months though it can be removed if inserted near the umbilicus. It is currently off label for cats and developed for male dogs, but then I'm sure many drugs are off label
