Classic sign of submission? and why?

This is kinda strange to me.

Monet and Picasso gets along great. they're always playing and grooming each other. Monet's at the point where he doesn't care of Picasso pounces at him or gets too close.

This morning, upon waking up, Monet was curled up against my face, as usual. Cassie jumps up, I guess she was startled to see him there, and she froze in place. She did not move a millimeter, ears back and eyes wide. Monet leans over, gives her a sniff and a quick lick to her ear. She still didn't move a millimeter. After a few seconds, Monet then swatted at her, causing her to crouch back. I am not sure if he hissed or not, I didn't have my hearing aids in. When she crouched back, she once again did not move a speck. She stayed that way until Monet jumped off the bed and she became instantly animated again. Life proceeded as normal after this.

To me, it seemed Monet was saying "It's OK, you don't have to be submissive" with his lick to her ear. But when she didn't move still, he got annoyed and swatted her.

On Cassie's side, I guess she felt because Monet was close to me, she shouldn't get close and got scared?

What do you guys think? my hunch right with both submission pose and theory to why?

This is something similar to Rosie and Jack, and l wonder if she's letting him know she's still alpha cat?.

Their very close, but if Rosie's lying on my legs and Jack jumps up he stands still for a few seconds.  Jack loves to be close to Rosie and practically lies on her, but sometimes Rosie gives him a few head bops when he goes to flop down on her and he cowers down and takes it before slowly lying back down again, then she starts washing his head like she's saying "Sorry l hit you" confused.gif
