Annual Exams

Thread Starter

My cats are going to have their annual exam soon. Is there anything in particular that happens at the annual exam of a 2 year old? Any tests that should be run or anything like that? My male had urinary troubles (stress related, is on a urinary diet now) a year ago and hasn't had any trouble since, should I have a urinalysis done to see how things are going, or would that be unnecessary? Just want to make sure everything is covered :)

Unless you have reason to worry or the vet thinks it would be good to do a 'control' test, I would think it would be unnecessary. But certainly remind your vet of the medical history. Write a list of what needs to be done - I have had vets do annual exams that were basically a superficial look and a question to me if everything is all right! Needless to say, I never went back there. Normally the vet starts by looking at the cat, even smelling it, and running his hands all over it to check for lumps etc., and a manipulation of the belly to see that the internal organs are all OK. Heart, lungs, eyes, ears, teeth, temperature, and condition of fur/skin should all be checked, and a look for fleas or external parasites. At 2 years old there is probably no need for the joints to to be examined, though he may look at the claws. Anything else will depend on the medical history of the cat or your questions.

Be sure you know how much your cats eat ( if it looks fat or thin the vet may weigh it) and drink, and write down any questions you have. It is amazing how things fly out of your mind once in hte surgery!
