He's just gorgeous, l love his eyes and his white chops

Hiroshi is indeed very handsome Blue Mackerel Tabby.  and would be categorized as   "Domestic Shorthair" , meaning like most cats he's no particular breed.  and has a mix of genes from the general cat population

At least I think it's mackerel tabby.  Maybe the sub-category known as 'broken mackerel tabby',  where it is basically in a pattern of vertical stripes on the sides but the stripes are broken up.

I can't be totally sure on the pattern since out of all these great photos, there isn't a side view with his body stretched out,  to really see the pattern.    If it is instead more swirls/ whorls   with wider markings,   that would make him a Blue Classic Tabby.

There is a great variety in tabby patterns    --  in the amount of contrast  between the darker and lighter fur ,   the amount of dark markings compared to the amount of the lighter agouti areas,  and in the exact placement  of the pattern itself.

Hiroshi does have a more subtle pattern than some other tabbies;  i think it is really lovely,  very impressionistic  if i were to compare him to art.

Awh, why thank you. And I could try to get a side shot of him if you would like? For some reason, he loves having his photo taken! A very photogenic kitty.

I do indeed love your comparison to that of an art piece, it was lovely.

Hello, this is my little lady, Pandora. I have never really thought of her as any particular breed, and I have always been okay with that. She's my little domestic shorthair. I have to say though, that after finding this thread on google and learning of the word Moggy(ies), I am super happy to have a new term to use for her, and it's such an adorable word too!

The reason I was searching though is because I have a roommate who was saying things like "She's a Persian, she's probably worth a lot of money, you're so lucky!" This bothered me because she's always just been a Tabby to me, and as far as I know, she doesn't look like a Persian at all. Granted, I am no expert, I actually know very little about official terms and breeds and such. I understand now, from reading the thread, how different cats are from dogs in terms of breeds.

So, that said, any ideas on what she resembles, or even a more accurate way to describe her colour/pattern than just Gray Tabby would be super amazing.

Pandora is a lovely silver/grey tabby "moggie". I like that term too, very cute. I don't what your roommate is thinking of as Persians are long haired and have flatter faces.

Hi guys I'm back with Sol's sister Luna

She's also 8 weeks old.
She's as cute as her sister!

And she's shorthaired too. Persians are longhairs. :)

She is however a beautiful cat, and I think your roomie is just seeing her beauty and going, "Wait... a cat that beautiful just comes about by chance? No way!" But they do. Moggies are some of the most beautiful cats there are. Purebred cats' advantage is just that they have a particular, predictable kind of beauty. With a moggie, you never know what you're going to get.

Thank-you to everyone. All my roommates love to point out how beautiful she is. I'll probably be sneaking around the forums a bit to talk more about her.

Wow,  Miss Pandora is a lovely Blue Classic Tabby Domestic Shorthair ( "moggy") .  As other people said she  does not look like a Persian.   but probably having a somewhat shorter than average muzzle and roundish face made your friend think of Persians.

She does somewhat resemble an American Shorthair  ( which is the pedigree version of the DSH of the U.S. they have been bred and pedigrees kept for many many years.  they were in cat shows back in the 1800s.

I am not saying she necessarily has pedigreed American Shorthair ancestors,  but she would be similar to the cats who were the foundation of the breed.  and if you are from the U.S.,  even without having any pedigreed AS in her,  she may still be their very, very distant relative.

This is sure a page with some beautiful blue tabby pics ,  with Hiroshi and now Pandora!

@ kkl  --  look at Pandora to see an example of the Classic Tabby pattern in the same color as Hiroshi.

@ NatethePunk -- Wow,  she sounds like a great cat and indeed very smart.   I do love smart cats.    Also sounds like she is very loyal,  to want to warn you about danger.

I can't really tell you a breed because cats are not like dogs that are usually a breed or a mix of a few breeds.  There has been a lot less selective breeding of cats;  the vast majority of cats have just bred randomly on their own,  so they are a mix from the general cat population in their part of the world.      These random-bred cats come in a big variety of colors and patterns,  and they're known as Domestic Shorthairs or Domestic Longhairs ,  or affectionately nicknamed "moggies" .    I think it would be very hard to tell if she had any pedigreed ancestry.

Re color & pattern,  unfortunately the photos are rather dark and I can't even tell her color for sure.  Depending on whether the dark fur is black or dark grey, she would be called a Black and White Bicolor   or Blue and White Bicolor.      She would be considered like a 6 or 7 grade of White Spotting according to one system of classifying the amount of white.

and it's hard to tell from the photos if she is even  "Domestic Shorthair" or "Domestic Longhair"!    I would guess shorthair,  but she does have a very plush looking coat that looks longer than the average shorthair.   But if she has a big floofy plumed tail with hairs that are like 2.5+ inches  ,  she would be Domestic Longhair.

So I am batting about zero on being able to give definite info,  but  I can tell she is a pretty cat!

My cats are pedigreed Siberian Forest cats. They are popular with owners who have allergies otherwise to cat dander. It is the first time I have owned a pedigree cat. No allergies - I like the breed characteristics
