Hills ZD Canned Cat Food - Hairy mold

Gus the Cat because of medical issues gets fed Hills ZD canned cat food. Last night I opened a can and discovered what appears to be hairy mold growing on top of the food (yuck). There was no apparent damage to the can. I am going to call Hills tomorrow to speak to them about this. Is their any Govt agency I should also contact to report this to. Apparently something is seriously wrong if this could happen.

Any advice would be appreciated.

FDA food and drug administration. But I don't know if they do pet foods. I am interested in what Hill's has to say.

They do now. It's a fairly new program and here's the link:  The Safety Reporting Portal.

Thanks Auntie Crazy for the link. I will report it tonight.

Call Hills this morning and was told there could be numerous causes such as a pinhole in the can, food stored at high temperatures etc. None of which applied in this case. Gave them the lot numbers and expiration date. Got an apology, asked to email a picture of the mold and told to return the unopened cans to my Vet for a refund.

I kind of got the impression that they have received these types of calls in the past. I did a web search and found several other complaints of mold in pet food.

I've read very mediocre reviews on Hills Science diet in general.  As a "priemium" pet food, it ranks quite low.  Please consider trying another brand.

I was giving Lucas Hills z/d because he has food allergies, but, he turned out to be allergic to it too, go figure!  If the food is supposed to be ultra allergen free, why does it have corn starch?  It is crazy, I'm giving him the dry z/d because I have no choice, that one is the only one that he is not allergic to.  But that will change once I find out what foods he is not allergic to, I wanto to give him a more nutritious food.
