Just curious - how much does a visit to the doctor cost in the US? Here everyone has medical insurance - it's mandatory and it's not too expensive either. We pay about $30 a month for the whole family (two adults and 1 baby soon to be two babies).

In response to your husband not having any insurance - I still have a few $US over here that I get sometimes when I buy stuff off ebay from the USA. There is not a lot - poss $30.00 but I get paid on 15.09 and I will happily change some English £ over to your currency and mail it direct if you want to give me your mailing address off list on my personal message thing.
It would mean that you are not totally out of pocket and it would put a little spare cash in your hand within a couple of weeks and you ensure your husband gets the medical care.
I would not want it back at all. Just get your other half well and let me know -
Its a sincere offer - I am not loaded but whats mine that I have you can have airmailed to you straight away and anymore in a few weeks.
Best wishes

Kevin

The Doctor's office opens in 1/2 hour and we'll get him in somehow today.

Kev, your offer is amazing! God, you just brought tears to my eyes.
We'll be able to cover it, just have to juggle some things. It's just that I don't want to take him in when it's unnecessary. This time it is very necessary, and he will get the care he needs. I can't thank you enough for the offer, though. You are truly a noble gentleman!

Earl's fever got worse overnight. This morning it was 101.7. He's sleeping still and probably will be until I call for him to get ready to go to the doctor. The more I read, the more I think it is either pneumonia or severe bronchitis. Either way, it won't get better on it's own.

Anne, insurance here is expensive. In order to get him on my insurance plan (the company pays 100% for mine, but I would have to pay for spouse/dependents), it would be over $400 per month. We've checked into other plans for just him, and those still run about $200 per month. At this point in time, it just isn't feasible to add that kind of monthly expense. Unless this is really serious, I will still end up paying less for the visit and presciptions than I would one month's premiums. (This is why there is such talk of socializing the insurance coverage in the US - unless you are with a good employer, who has chosen a good insurance plan, the cost is unreachable for most middle-income people.)

When Mike retired about 10 years ago, we were covered so well with Blue Cross/Blue Shield. In order to keep that coverage it would have cost us $700.00 per month, per person! That would mean full dental, medical and eye- but still that is a chunk of change.

When I got hurt last year, by the time I was finished with all the MRI's and other tests we were into the hospital for $5,000.00! Now we just owe them a couple of thousand. The hardest part about being self-employed and owning such a small business is finding adequate medical insurance to cover you. So far, we have been unsuccessful.

Heidi, I hope Earl is going to be okay. Poor man must be so miserable and probably making you nuts right now!

We are so lucky in Canada that visits tot he hospital and doctors are covered. We only have to pay for meds, and my work covers that.

I've got an appointment for him at 11:00, so in about 2 hours.

Now that I have that taken care of, I think I can actually concentrate on work until I have to leave to take him in.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and well wishes everyone. I'm really worried about him, but he's going to the right place to get better.

Gosh... I sure hope he's ok. (((hugs)))

And like Ady said, I too am thankful that all of the visits are covered. My work also covers meds and it only costs me $8.00 per month for that coverage (spouse and children included) I can't imagine how stressful it must be when you are sick and the options are limited. My thoughts are with you....

Wow! That is expensive!!! Don't the employers pay that for you then? I mean one way or another it comes off your salary... Why does it have to be so expensive? Seems a lot of money to me...

I like it the way the Germans do it . You are automatic covered with a insurance when you have a job or geting unemployment (sp) . It comes right out of your salary there . I am glad that we have try care for retired army otherwise it would be more $$$$$ .

Anne, my employer pays for the employee's insurance, but not for spouses and children. My last employer didn't pay for any insurance, but it came off of pre-tax pay. That was actually a much better plan than I have now and it was about $220 for both Earl and I.

It is expensive, and a lot of it has to do with the amount that doctors charge to cover their liability insurance in the sue happy USA. I asked how much the office visit would be (so I wasn't blown away when I got the bill!) and she told me between $80-100, but they usually give some kind of discount to self-payers (they don't have the hassle of filing all the paperwork with the insurance companies). Hopefully she can just listen to his symptoms and his chest and know what it is, because every x-ray runs about $80-100 too. Our doctor is really cool, though, and very understanding about money. I'm not usually one for big government programs, but this whole health plan/insurance system here is broken and is in desperate need of fixing!

I'll let you all know what we find out. I talked to Earl and his fever is now up to 102.2. At least I know he's going to the doctor in an hour, otherwise I would really be a nervous wreck!

Sponge him with some cool water and give him some Tylonol to bring down the fever! If he can handle it - stick him in a luke warm bath - it will feel cold to him, but it should help with the fever!

I guess I can put my .02 worth in also. As I am now recovering from pneumonia I can say it is no fun. Three weeks ago I came down with a viral infection and was running a fever as high as 103. Of course, since viral there is nothing you can do but ride it out. I went from Monday to Early Saturday morning with a fever, chills. I think I changed my bed 5 times during this time. I also had sinus infection. Doctor gave me meds to help me rest but as that was breaking up in went into my lungs and before I knew it I had pneumonia the next week. The wheezing is the worst to me, anitbiotics is the only way out of pneumonia and strong ones at that. I had several chest x-rays to top that off. Although I did work last week and this week it will take several weeks to clear this up. My wheezing has gotten better but worse at night when I lay down. I have an inhaler (saravent) that really helps plus they gave me two strong antibiotic and steroid shots on Monday. I'm slowly getting my strength back and can feel it when I push myself.

I hope Earl gets the care he needs and is feeling better really soon. You know the only good thing that has come from me being sick is I lost 10 pounds!!! Now to keep it off the right way.

Healing prayers to Earl,
Cathy

The doctor has said I have to give a sample in November and December following my vasectomy - why would he want to give samples away like this???
