So I was driving to work tonight and was seconds away from being in a horrible car crash.  Lucily for me, I'm a highly suspicious driver and don't trust anyone on the road.   I take the back road to work and the only area I have to worry about much traffic is about two miles from work when the road I take crosses Kellogg. If any of you have been to Wichita, KS you know that Kellogg is pretty much the busiest street in the city since it runs through the entire city, and is a direct road to the airport and pretty much all the interstates that run through town.    As I was coming up to the light, it turned green for the north bound lanes and left turning lane.  Being suspicious, I still ALWAYS look both ways before heading through an intersection (I don't stop but I don't really accelerate until I know its clear.) When I looked both ways, I noticed a car heading west on Kellogg was going a little too fast for comfort, so I decided that I'd continue to coast up to the light until I was sure he was going to stop......the truck in the turning lane was not so observational and decided to turn left right when the arrow turned green, well the car the was going too fast ended up slamming into them going about 55mph. I'm guessing the car was going that speed...if not faster because kellogg is 55 until right after the intersection then it goes down to 45.  Both the pick-up truck and the car spun several times and ended up hitting one of the traffic light poles then blocking the east bound lanes on kellogg.   I'm just glad the passenger count wasn't the opposite then what they were. The truck had a family in it, looked like a grandma, mother, and 3 kids varying in ages, from what I could see, the truck was still in pretty good shape....that car didn't luck out.  The entire passenger side was crunched in so much that it looked like the passenger seat was now encroaching on the driver. Thank goodness there was only a driver in the car or else there would have been some serious injuries if not a fatality.

I wish I could have stayed to be a witness but I had to get to work, there were already enough witnesses that they didn't need me but still.

Anyways, I about peed myself. I keep thinking that it could've been me that got hit soo easily, if I hadn't been as watchful or if I had just thought, he has a red light, he'll stop and then accelerate to go through the intersection, it would have been. I bet the pick up still would have been hit since we'd been going through the intersection about the same time if I hadn't been coasting.  It had all seemed like it happened in slow motion because my reaction and decision not to accelerate and then the car running the light and the accident it caused all happened in a matter of a second or two. I just had enough time to shift my foot over to the brake incase I decided to stop before it happened.  So scary!!

Even when you're not directly involved, an accident like that can really shake you up. It's a good thing you practice defensive driving!

Thank God you weren't involved.  I am a cautious driver too. A week and half ago, when I was driving on the freeway to work, I was in the slow lane. My exit was coming up soon. I guess the pickup in the next lane wanted my lane since he started changing lanes when I was beside him. I swerved into the breakdown lane as he swerved back into his lane. But if I hadn't swerved, he would have hit me..... at 65 mph. I was shaking when I got to work.

That happens ALL the time during the week on the freeways here, that's why I take back roads during the week (that and I just hate driving in traffic)

I agree!

If I were you I'd phone the police and tell them that you witnessed the accident and give your account anyway. It may or may not be needed, but you never know.
In hindsight, I should have but I wasn't thinking that logically. My main thoughts were concern, dread, and relief. I was worried about the people in the car and truck and I wanted to pull over and wait for the cops with them, but I was freaked out because A. it happened and B. it could have been me so easily and then I was relieved that it wasn't me that had gotten hit and that it looked like everyone at least in the truck got out and seemed shaken but ok.    Then behind all that was 'I gotta get to woork'

I know, my sister always gives me a hard time because I'm not an agressive driver but if I had been, it would have been me that got hit.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
Whew...Im glad I drive like you. That was a close encounter.

I take back roads alot around here but those are actually more dangerous. Even this morning coming home from dropping df off at work..right along the side of the highway some idiot hunter was just walzing along. He better thank his maker that I have amazing headlights in my vehicles cuz there was no way I would have seen him so close to the edge of the road with basic headlights. I HATE HUNTING SEASON!!!! There are tons of deer caused accidents during this time AND idiot hunters running around willy nilly like they own the roads. Parked right on the edge of busy roads like its a walmart parking lot!! Beh...Im glad that Df ignored my complaining and spent 60 bucks on new headlights for our cars...those lights have saved my butt more times than I can count...especially for seeing deer in fields.

You can still phone the police and tell them the time and date of the accident and that you were a witness to it. I've done that when I've been on a bus and have seen a car accident that looked serious.

You don't have to stay and wait to be interviewed, in order to be a witness. You can call after the fact and give the details.

It's not too late to call today.
