On Saturday my 7 month old female was spayed. Her appetite seemed to return the next day, but yesterday and today she has not been acting normal. She was meowing for the food as she normally does but when I put it down she just sniffed it and walked away. Normally she eats hers and trys to eat my 3yr olds too. Is there something I should be concerned about. It just doesn't seem right. How long after the surgery does their appetite return. I used the two canned foods that I always use. I don't get it. Maybe she is eating while I am not looking, but she never hesitated before. The food has been laying around for longer than normal. Any Ideas? Is it common for a cat to lose their appetite for more than a few days?

Would really be a good idea to contact your vet about this. Is she on any medication such as antibiotics or pain meds? Something may be making her nauseous, or she could be feeling painful. How is she acting otherwise?

It's extremely important that cats eat, so you might have to offer her a buffet of food like stinky canned Fancy Feast, low salt canned salmon or sardines, plain chicken baby food, or some other treat that she really loves.

I agree about calling your vet, just to be on the safe side. Maybe she just doesn't feel very well yet and if she's not on any pain meds, maybe your vet might give you something for her. Good luck!

If she is on pain meds or antibiotics that may affect her.appetite like the others said. I would suggest calling your vet . I also would get a feeding syringe and some a/d from the vet and syringe feed her.if she continues not to eat. Give her 20 mls every 4 hours. Offer her food first then if she doesn't eat, syringe feed her. Ask your vet to show you how. A/d is a high fat high protein food for critical care but it is easy to syringe feed and may even encourage her to eat. Just keep in mind that it is not a food to be fed on a regular basis. It is critical that your cat eats.

sorry for the delay. I haven't been near my computer for the last few days because of the holiday. Scaredy was never given any pain meds after getting spayed. Her appetite has returned. Thanks for all your help. This has been very stressful for me since I have never had any of my cats fixed, not since I was a kid anyway. My adult female was already spayed and micro-chipped when I adopted her. So I have been reading about how to monitor the incision and they keep emphasizing "watch for redness and any swelling." Her incision is definately red. but it is scab like. Is it normal for the incision itself to be red? There is also a little bit of discharge from the incision. It is very minimal so far. This is day six. Also she has had some dark brown discharge from her eyes. Its a little gunky and dark. Does anyone know what this may be. Does anyone know of any good sites for pet health info that could help give me some answers. Thanks for your help
