Question of the Day Wed Nov 23, 2011

Thread Starter

I am posting this early as I gotta get up early tomorrow.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and my question is about stuffing. Do you stuff the bird or just put it in a casserole dish? What kind of stuffing do you like?

I normally stuff the bird and also will make a small casserole out of it. We like cornbread stuffing with onions and celery.

My Mom usually does it.  I think she does both.  A few years ago she started making a stuffing that had diced apples and cranberries in it.  It didn't sound like something I would normally like; but it's FANTASTIC!  She usually does a plain stuffing too.  I think that's what she puts in the bird.  I did the turkey 2 years ago and I can't honestly remember if I stuffed it or not!

I never have made stuffing, though I'd like to try it. Always have put it in a casserole dish.

I use white, wheat, and pumpernickel bread cubes. I saute onions and celery in butter, add chicken broth and diced sage leaves. I stir it all together and bake in a casserole dish. It also tastes good with some crumbled sausage.

My mom does both bird and casserole dish. I wish she still cooked like she did when we were growing up but there are certain nutcases in the family..ahem df who dont like pepper so she does not season anything so that way everyone can season it themselves. Crazy people ruining food...silly df and sister..

Crock pot! We brine the bird, so we never stuff it anymore.

I use a stuffing of white, whole wheat and cornbread with browned sausage, onion, and chopped Granny Smith apples (and sometimes I'll add some dried cranberries for color). Throw it all in a large bowl, add beaten eggs, the herbs and chicken broth or stock. Put it in a lightly greased crock pot and cook for about four hours. And life is good. smile.gif

I bake the stuffing separately because I stuff the turkey with vegetables (celery, carrots, apples, onion, garlic) to make an incredibly savory gravy. It's all about the gravy! I might have to bake a turkey this weekend, the American in me is craving it this time of year, lol.

I have never made a turkey, my husband makes it. He usually buys boxed stuffing and stuffs the turkey.

I've always done them separately (there will be a punctured grapefruit stuffed in the turkey as an aromatic; it never fails to scare me when I look in and see that grapefruit after it's turned brown.)  laughing02.gif  This year I am doing my stuffing in the crockpot.  I made macaroni and cheese in the crockpot last Christmas with one of the main ingredients being a can of cheese soup.  I could not believe how good it turned out.  Cheese soup, who knew?  dontknow.gif

I''m not cooking this year, as we're going to our neice.  But I always used to put the stuffing in the turkey plus a casserole of stuffing on the side.   I would use onions, celery, mushrooms, bread cubes, egg, chicken broth, lots of garlic (I love garlic).

I don't cook turkeys very often, but I do cook chickens. And when I do stuffing, I stuff the chicken just before it goes into the oven. And when it comes out, I remove the stuffing.

I figure I lived 16 years with my Mom doing that, and she lived 52 years with her Mom doing that, and her Mom lived 80 some years stuffing birds. SoI don't buy into the whole "stuffing a bird can kill you" fear mongering.

I still go to either my parent's house or the BFs parents house for Thanksgiving, so I've never made it myself (yet). But when my mom makes it she does it is a casserole dish. She used to put it in the turkey, but then I became a vegetarian in high school (am not one anymore) so she started doing it in the dish. Now she keeps doing it that way as she says its a lot easier for her. Stuffing is my favorite part of the meal!!

Always stuff the turkey and have a casserole dish of stuffing as well. A bunch of stuffing lover's in this family. The stuffing always is the first to run out... biggrin.gif:wavey:
