I run in Reeboks- I have the zig-zag shoes, they're supposed to protect against shin splints because I am unfortunately prone to those. They don't seem to work very well for me in that regard, so I'm sticking to the elliptical in the gym for now.

For walking around and just doing whatever I've got an old pair of Sketchers w/ Dr Scholls in 'em, and then my Converse. I have nine pair. biggrin.gif

My son has the Zigtechs, and he runs cross country. (At his age, it's only 2 miles) anyway, within the first week of practices, his knees, and feet and heels started to really hurt him. I come to find out, they are NOT really running shoes. I took him to a Professional running store (that's all they do) and after being measured, weighed and then trying on several pairs, he is in a pair of NB's and can run forever. If you are prone to shin splints, it means you aren't striking properly, and that can be your shoes, or the strength in your legs isn't what it should be. Downhills will hurt your shins, if you lean backwards when running them (which is what most people do). Also, striking on your heel can cause shin pain. You may need to start more slowly, and stay at a slower pace and VERY slowly work yourself up to higher speed and mileage. Find a running store (Not sports authority type of stores) and have them measure your feet properly and make sure they take your weight into consideration when they recommend a shoe for running. Brand name means almost nothing in running. You need to have something that will be comfortable for you and your feet, which may be far different from anyone else's feet. I adore my Brooks, which are not a big, popular brand, but they fit my feet, my weight, and my running style, and that's what matters.

Don't not run because of shin splints-with time and patience, those can be defeated and worked around.

As far as how long a running shoe should last, most good shoes should last 300-400 miles. A free app on your phone can help keep track of yours and your shoes mileage.

Thanks for all of your feedback ...
there are so many reasons why we wear sneakers.

I had never even thought of Brooks before but before I read your reply, I just bought a pair on sale at a running store. I have only worn them once but they were very comfortable. I hope that over time they stay that way. Shopping is hard work. laughing02.gif
I love the red color on them. So cool cool.gif
Check them out...... Adrenaline GT

I really hate Nike, even though I have a pair of running sneaks by themdoh3.gif. I honestly believe that Adidas is much better quality for the $, as well as better lookingwink.gif. My second pick is Puma, this sneaker is so good, I have yet to ever find my size on sale!smashfreak.gif

I have really bad feet.  I overpronate to the point that I have no arch when standing barefoot.  I have all the problems with painful calluses developing.  Right now I have a pair of Dr Scholls sneakers and I have inserts in them.  This is the most comfortable combination I have come up with.  Before these I wore Adidas with the inserts.  They were okay but not as comfortable as the Dr Scholls,

I used to wear Nikes, then switched over to New Balance but my all time favorites are Saucony which I wear for walking or running now.

New Balance and Asics fit my feet the best, so they are definitely my favorites! smile.gif

I prefer New Balance or Asics. They are great for my feet and I have never had any problems with any foot pain. Other brands like Nike, etc - I end up having to buy insoles.

What will give me the best/most cushion---running or walking shoes?  As I said, I've had broken bones i both feet and it's hard to find a comfortable pair of sneakers, but sneakers are just about all I wear.  Any thoughts?

Really that depends on your feet.... where the broken bones are, what type of arches you have, etc. Lots of factors, and it is impossible for anyone to answer your question.

Walking vs running shoes, either may work for you. I am assuming that you are just walking in them? No jogging or running?

I would think that running shoes would offer you more cushioning, as running shoes are designed for the huge impact that occurs when their feet hit the ground while running. I think for runners, the impact is that of 3x your body weight, vs walkers which is 1 to 1.5x.

So that's where I'd start off for you.... running shoes.... and not walmart ones. Go to a sports store ( I like Sport Chek, and I believe they are in both US and Canada) and start trying on shoes. Don't just try em on, stand and walk 2 steps.... give em a good try, walk 20+ steps, give a little bounce in em...really try and get a feel for how the shoe works for your foot. The one great thing about sports stores is that they promote good shoes, they can answer questions, etc. Heck, you can go in, find a brand/model number you like, then go home and look online for it, see if you can find it cheaper.

For the survey, I LOVE Saucony. It's all I wear now..... they hold up quite well under my weight, with running, jogging, trail walking/jogging, day to day walking/errand running, etc. I have several pairs (*about 7 or 8) and one is my "daily walkers".... others are specific.... one pair are for walking on sidewalk/concrete.... another for jogging the trails.... another for any harder surface like road walking or jogging..... etc.

They usually go on sale where you buy one at full price, and get the second for half price.

They are still expensive, but well worth it IMO.

I can even get away with wearing mens Saucony's, which is awesome because sometimes I've had a hard time getting my size, but they have loads in the mens size since it's a "smaller" size for a man so they don't sell as many... ( I wear a mens 8, or a womans 9-10 )

I've tried others, I do have a pair of Nikes, and have had one other in the past. I am not a fan. Something about Nikes hurt my feet. The one pair I do have, I like as I can wear them without socks. I use these for exercising around the house..... running up and down stairs.

But I wouldn't use them for outdoor exercising.... walking is ok as long as it's not "athletic walking".

Hope that helps.

I use Ryka shoes and they are great for working out in because my feet stay cool...BUT now that its getting cold out, my feet get a litte chilly when I'm wearing them outside because they are about 85% mesh. They're priced right which I love and they are sooo comfortable and light.
