Hello,

My cat Moon-Unit is 6 years old. He had a lot of trouble with urinary blockages and completely obstructed and had PU surgery 16 months ago. The surgery went really well and aside from 2 UTI's, he has had no problems.

10 day ago I noticed he was very lethargic, not eating or drinking and having trouble with toileting plus his urine smelt awful! So, I took him to the vets and they did some tests. They did an ultrasound because his bladder was quite hard, and noted that he had some inflammation at the neck of his bladder and is was quite narrowed. They gave him antibiotics, anti-inflammatorys and a hormone tablet to help him urinate, they said it helps with the muscles and relaxes them.

He is back to his usual self, but I have noticed his toileting is still quite unusual. He is not spending a lot of time in the litter box in the sense of having a UTI, it just takes him quite awhile to empty his bladder and when he is done, there are lots of medium and small size clumps in the litter tray, so his flow is stopping and starting. He also dribbles a bit when he gets out of the tray, and this morning he used the tray but he got off before he finished and left a little puddle on the floor...and something else unpleasant..

I contacted the vet and she said since he sounds quite well in himself, she thinks it is related to what they saw on the ultra-sound. She is going to send me out some more of the hormone tablets, as I think his peeing was improved on that.

I am concerned that he has some strictures related to the surgery, but would that kind of thing present so suddenly? Usual he is quite good at using the toilet and leaves good sized amounts of wee, but it's only been recently that he has started this small weeing thing. I know he can do a good sized wee, because when I put him in his carrier to go to the vet he pee'd all over me and the cage. I had to put him in his carrier 3 days ago as well, and the same thing - he wee's all over the place!! Could it be a postural issue too? Or perhaps I am being a bit decieved by the cat litter? Maybe I could remove the litter from his tray so I can physically see his output, not just clumps?

Does anybody have any experience with this? I am going to keep an eye on him. I have been trying to make sure he drinks plenty of fluid, I have been giving him a bit of water with a syringe as well just to make sure he's drinking plenty. He doesn't drink a lot, he never has.

At the end of the day, he seems to be putting out as much urine as usual - just in very small amounts and it takes him much longer to do it.

I had a cat that required PU surgery many many years ago, but there were never any complications. Sorry you and Moon-Unit (love his name!) are having problems now. One question, what does Moon-Unit eat these days?

He eats Royal Canin 'Young Male' with the SO index to help dilute his urine - he has both wet and dry food.

He still seems fine in himself, and he has been to the toilet once more since my original post - half in his tray, then he got out and did the rest on the floor.

Thanks for the link. I just put his dry kibbles away and will just give him his wet food.
