I really don't want to be vilified here. My boyfriend and I love our kitten like we would love our own child, and it's not just a case of 'we don't want to pay for a vet' (we actually have the kitty insured, so money is no object when it comes to vet bills). What happened today was an accident and we're both devastated by it.
My boyfriend is a big guy, and the kitten is not: she's only thirteen weeks old. He was playing with the kitten by letting her crawl around under him and 'trapping' her. They do this all the time, and his stomach is lifted off the ground so she isn't actually being crushed or anything. Well, earlier, they were playing that way, and had been for a while, when suddenly he came back up and she wasn't moving or breathing. He called her name; he petted her; he gently gave her a little poke; he shook her paw; everything, but she would not wake up, and she was completely limp and lifeless. I don't know how much time passed because I thought she was dead: I was screaming, crying, trying to get to her while my boyfriend tried to comfort me... I wasn't exactly watching the clock. I can tell you that we're talking under five minutes here, more likely under three or even two. I certainly don't mean "it could have been twenty minutes or it could have been an hour, I dunno".
Just as I tried to break free from my boyfriend to give her CPR, she started to twitch and come around. At first she had her eyes open and was breathing but not moving. After a little while she lifted her head and it looked like she was trying to get up but couldn't. Gradually she was able to get up, but was very wobbly and wanted nothing to do with us. She was walking very funny: not just wobbling, but sometimes her feet would turn the wrong way (like she was walking on her 'wrist' instead of her paw). She managed to get up the stairs but got near the top one and just lay down there. When we went near her she was purring, and after a little while longer she got back up and was fine. I very, very carefully gave her a bath because she loves water and I thought it would perk her up a little bit, and it did.
That was about two hours ago. Now, you wouldn't know that anything happened, she seems right back to her normal self. I've had cats for 10+ years but I've never had a cat go unconscious, and definitely not stop breathing. Do we need to take her to the vet, even though she seems fine? What do we need to watch out for? What can we do for her at home until we can get her to the vet?
The ONLY reason we aren't at the vet right now is that we don't have a car. The only person who is available to take us is on standby, but they're with family that they never see, so they can't unless it's an emergency and we have to go. I really don't want to be attacked for this. We both feel more terrible about this than anyone can imagine.
