Nervous Cats...help!

Hi,

I have two cats and had them both since they were kittens. They have always been very nervous of everything, including us, even after spending lots of time with them when they were babies. They flinch and jump when we move or rustle a bag. They don't let us stroke them unless they come to us, and hate house guests. They have their moments when they're affectionate but they are rare. We've recently got a cat flap, but they've been going outside for about a year now, and another cat comes in when were not there and it completely freaks them out and they have actually pooped on the floor through fear of the other cat. I am worried and would love some advice. I was wondering if one of those plug in cat things would help.

Thanks for advice!

I would definitely get a Feliway diffuser to plug in. It'll take a week or so to kick in so bear with it

Bachs Rescue Remedy is good as well. You just a a few drops in their food or drinking water

I am wondering, why are you leaving the cat flap unlocked when you are not home? Not only can strange cats and other small animals get in there, but pet flaps make breaking into someone's home very easy.

I'm definatley going to get a Feliway, thanks for the tip Rosiemac.

We leave it open because I want the cats to come and go as they please, in all the years i've owned cats I've never locked them in or out unless it's fireworks night or something like that.

It's really not big enough for anyone to get in plus we live in a tightly packed area of the city so no one has access to our garden at all, It would be impossible for anyone to get in. The other cat hasn't been in for a while now, so I think we have scared it off.
