My sister could really use some vibes for a cat that's she taking care of.  She house-sitting for the dad of a friend the died a year ago in a motorcycle crash and she's watching his 16 year old male cat as well while he's away.   A week ago Buddy, the cat started not eating and hiding down in the basement all day and barely using the bathroom. What stool he did do was black.   My sister has done all that she can do until the owner of the cat comes back at the end of next week.  She was tried everything to get him to eat, she has 3 different kinds of food for him down in the basement, kitten food, canned food and reg.food. She also has been trying to get him to drink this nutritional drink that is pretty much described as Ensure for cats but he has barely touch his food. She has had to shave Buddy's butt too because he's getting too week to support himself when he does go poo so he gets pool in his long fur. She works full time and goes to school full time and is also trying to plan her wedding so she's not there as much as she wants but she didn't want Buddy to have to lay around his poo all over so it was her only solution.

Monday she was finally able to get him into the vet and she found out that Buddy has a mass the size of a baseball in his stomach. The vet thinks its cancer but its hard to say.  They told her that the only thing that can be done for him is to put Buddy to sleep because he is too old and too weak to survive any kind of surgery. Since he's not her cat she can't make that decision until Rod, Buddy's owner come home. She called Rod to see what he wanted to do but he said he wants her to just make him as comfortable as she can and try to get Buddy to last until he gets home the end of next week.  My sister is pulling her hair out, because if it was up to her she would have put him down the same day as the vet trip because she's had to see Buddy suffer and she knows its not fair to him.      In the last few days there has be news that could be good or bad.  Wednesday or Thursday Buddy started so show signs that he was feeling better but both animals and people have been known to "get better" right before they die, so this could just mean that he won't be here much longer.  He still hasn't been eating much but he has started coming upstairs for short periods of time and seems to try to beg for people food. He has also started begging to go outside BUT that may only mean he wants to go off somewhere and die like some animals try to do.  Tonight I had gone over to my sister's for dinner and she took me down to see Buddy and he is so skinny!   You can feel every bone in his body and all of his food has been untouched. My sister says that she has tried to warm up the canned food since heat activates the scent molecules but it hasn't helped. She always makes sure she puts fresh food down at least twice a day because out of experience some cats won't eat food that has been out for awhile. The most Buddy seems to do is lick some of the moisture from canned food but besides that he leaves everything alone.

My sister has quarantined him to the basement because she doesn't want her cat Yoda to catch anything in case what Buddy has is contagious. She hates it but luckily Buddy hasn't even really tried to come upstairs, its Yoda who has been trying to get downstairs because of the kitten food and canned food.  She makes sure she spends time down there with Buddy, she does some of her homework down there but the smell is pretty bad. It might be a psychological thing but it smells like disease down there.

Pleas send my sister and Buddy good vibes and pray that Buddy can at least hold out for his owner to get home.

That's an awful situation, I am sorry....:vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
This kitty is going to die, I know.... But for him to be comfortable, the poor thing has to eat.... :( Can your sister assist feed him? Sometimes it helps a lot to puree the (wet) food with water, then spoon-feeding to the kitty. Just put the spoon in front of the kitty's mouth, and generally, they will start eating. Put a dab of food on his little nose first for him to lick it off if he doesn't start eating on his own.
At this point, if he eats, tuna, give tuna... Treats? Give treats - Temptation treats are nutritionally balanced - shocker! It is all about getting him comfortable right now.... Doesn't matter what, I would just get him eating, and give him some love and comfort.....
I would ask the vet for a pain killer, an appetite stimulant, or anything to make him comfortable. Leaving him like that is not really comfortable or fair, IMHO...
Is this an inside cat? That sounds like cancer..... I am confused how that would be contagious?
Is he stressed out in the basement? How is it set up? Is it comfortable for him? Does it have enough light? A comfy bed?
God, hope his dad gets hope soon, this poor baby :(
Vibes for him, vibes for your sister :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Buddy is as comfortable as he can be. Its a full basment with no walls, just some support columns and it has 3 couches, 4 comfy chairs, 3 computer chairs, a pool table, and a few cat beds. So Buddy has many places that he can lay comfortably on. He usually sleeps on a wooden chair that has a cushion on it. According to my sister, its his favorite. My sister has tried bringing the food to him and put food up to his mouth but she can never get him to eat more than a bite or two after that he just keeps turning his head away from her and if she persists, he walks away from her.

The thing is is that the vet doesn't know what it is for sure. They think its cancer but they won't know til the blood work comes back. My sister doesn't want to take the chance that it is something contagious...however, if she hears buddy at the basement door, she'll let him upstairs as long as he's supervised. She doesn't want Buddy vomiting somewhere that Yoda has access to.  Buddy isn't a full time house cat, for most of his life he's been able to go outside as he pleases. He's been into a lot of cat fights in his long lifetime and from what I have heard, his owner was never really strict with getting him all of his shots.  My sister had to get him up to date, before she brought her cat over, so who knows what he's been exposed to.   He's pretty relaxed and seems comfortable as long as my sister goes down there and to give him attention. He seems more stressed when he is upstairs than he is downstairs, I think there's just more stimulation upstairs that he can't fully relax.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
What a sad, sad situation. :heart3: BTW, "contagious" would be determined by FeLV and FIV snap test, done right there at the vet's office, with results when you leave. A blood panel can only indicate which organs are being affected, and whether or not kitty is anemic or fighting an infection. And you can't diagnose cancer from bloodwork, though you can look at it and say it's consistent with cancer. Just FYI, so you don't expect any answers with the bloodwork, because there won't be any.

It does sound like kitty's bleeding from his small intestine (dark diarrhea, not eating much). :( Given there's a mass in his stomach, it sounds like if cancer, it's spread. :(

Poor little fella. And your poor sister.

Did they even give her prednisone or something to give him, to help make him a little more comfortable?

:vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: for both of them. :heart3:

I feel so bad for your sister having to try to manage poor Buddy while waiting for the owner to return. Poor Buddy, I wonder how he can make it a whole week or more till the owner comes home. :shame:. I will pray for Buddy. Your sister is doing all she possibly can for Buddy :hugs: :vibes::vibes::vibes:

for both of them.
My sister had him tested for FeLV and FIV as well before bringing Yoda into the house, I didn't mention it before sorry. He tested negative for both.   Both her and I know that blood work won't being a 100% answer but pretty much if what they're expecting to show up in the blood work shows up then they'll be pretty much certain about it.    Even if its not cancer, like the vet said, Buddy is too weak to survive any kind of procedure to either remove the mass or to take a sample of it so there's not really any options and no matter what the mass in his stomach is, its the source of his illness and he's going to die from it.  They told my sister that the only thing she and Rod can do is decide how they want Buddy to go.

I'm not really sure what the vet gave my sister for Buddy. Last time I spoke to her, we didn't have much time to really talk long about it.

I wanted to give everyone a update on Buddy. His daddy came home and is going to put Buddy to sleep probably Saturday. He doesn't want Buddy to suffer anymore and knows that its probably best for him.    Thanks for all the vibes, at least Buddy was able to hold on for his daddy to come home.
