Why did she need baths? Most cats don't need them. They keep themselves quite clean. Most baths disrupt the natural skin oils and things that help keep their skin flake free and healthy.
I use determination and a lot of caution. But really, I've given lots of foster kittens baths. If they are pretty young and don't have a mommy cat they do need it sometimes. I use blue Dawn dish detergent- it is really gentle, can help remove fleas if they have them, and does a good job removing crusty food and poo if they have any stuck on their hindquarters.
I'm with LDG, I don't think most cats ever need a bath. However, if there is a situation that calls for it (cat rolls in something, or like my senior citizen, personal grooming is less of a priority, or you have a Sphynx), then I prefer to use Earthbath Grooming Foam. It's hypo-allergenic and fragrance free, and you don't need any water. Just put some in your hands and rub it into their fur, then buff them dry with a towel. Even my old guy that freaks out if you accidentally get so much as a drop of water on him, doesn't mind the grooming foam.
I give Olive a bath when her fur starts to get really greasy or if her butt has poop on it. She tends to keep herself clean so these are far and few between.
She's actually really good for me I think because she got about a bath a day when I first got her because my room mates were paranoid about fleas and she was really infested.
What makes it much easier for me now that she is larger is a hose extension I have attached to my shower. It comes with a piece you screw on right behind your shower head, with an extra "outlet" that the pet hose attaches to. This way I can move the hose freely about and turn it on/off as needed.
I also use Earth bath. Their cat shampoo smells really nice.
