I was walking home and noticed this big and pretty bulky black cat. the whole block knows him as the trouble maker. or she, I'm not sure and nobody as bothered to find out. there's a few cats on my block, but he/shes the only one i always see alone. i managed to get close enough to let him pet me, and he meowed like a total sweetheart and rolled over. i thought he liked me because cats LOVE getting thee bellies rubbed, but as soon as i reached down, he got afraid and fled. I really wanna earn this cats trust and be friends with him, without anyone else finding out. What do i do?

I also have a small dog, and my mom and grand mom would KILL me if they caught me sowing it affection. so i own no cat treats and i want to keep my friendship with the cat a secret, but I'm determined to earn this cats heart and trust. All he needs is a friend

:D Welcome to TCS!!!!! :bigwink: AWW HOW sweet of you to care about this black cat. Truthfully, this cat needs more than just a friend, he/she needs to be sterilized. :hugs:. And if it is so friendly, are you sure it is not somebody's pet in the neighborhood? As you say he is fat and looks well fed. If you don't think he is owned, then he needs to be brought into a vet, low-cost clinic, or a rescue/shelter. He/She needs to be sterilized and I hope you will make the effort to do so :cross:. You can also google TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release Program) in your area and see if you can get some assistance to get this kitty fixed.

If the kitty rolls over, that is a great sign. But be careful, that does not mean they want to be pet. These unaltered strays can become overly stimulated and a bit aggressive with a lot of petting. So take care. I had a stray like that and some of these cat's can turn on you very quickly. It is not that they are mean-spirited, not in the least. It is the hormones raging and not used to being touched/pet that gets them over-excited. Just let the cat come up to you and rub on your legs, and just take it very slow with petting. Since it sounds like you won't get help from your mom and grand mom at least you can try to explain that if these cat's do not get trapped and fixed, there will be more kittens being born in your neighborhood :(. I would first start making some calls to some organizations and see if you can get some assistance with all of these stray cat's in your neighborhood.

Thanks for caring about the strays :hugs::hugs: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Right as Feralvr says.

Besides, he she is probably not sterilised/neutered/spayed.

(if a adult and tom, you will almost surely see the balls. Although some cats may be tricky. There are more than one Robert who suddenly got a big tummy and soon after two tiny kittens too! Getting the name Roberta after this   :)   )

After he got spayed he will be probably less protective of his territory, and thus, make less nuisance of himself. Less cat fights, less shrieking.

He wont spray so much either. And the urine wont smell so much...

So really, to neuter homeless cats (and free going, owned cats too) in the neighbourhood is a very sound investment for the peace and welfare of all involved.   :)

Tx for caring,

Good luck!   *vibes*
