Any experience with a cat taking a diuretic?

Tolly is on furosemide, a diuretic. I read up on it a little, but of course personal experiences are always helpful.

He is on a very tiny dose to start, 1/4 of a 12.5 mg pill, twice a day.

I know he will pee more and drink more. I know to watch for signs of low blood pressure.

But I'm wondering when I might expect to see a reduction of the fluid around his middle?

And should I give with food or on an empty stomach? I gave his first dose on an empty stomach with a water chaser.

Can you ask the vet who prescribed it? They're probably the best one to ask smile.gif

I'll be interested in the replies, too. Jamie has been on "Dimazon" (furosemid) for almost three weeks now due to congestive heart failure. The first week he got 1/4 of a 40 mg. tablet three times a day, and is now on 1/4 twice a day. The vet (cardiologist) said it was fine to give it to him in food, and there's nothing in the package insert about food, but it would be best to ask your vet anyway.

His electrolytes were checked a week after the dose was reduced to half a tablet per day (2x 10 mg), and he's supposed to have them checked every four weeks. His water intake (and urine output) pretty much went back to normal once the dose was lowered. He's a big cat - 6.9 kg/15 lbs..

Cow is on Lasix & has been now for several months. He was very ill when he got started, and had a blood panel when he was first started as well as several more since then. He continues to have health problems that are un-related to the Lasix.

Thanks for your replies. As it turns out, Tolly has cancer, so the furosemide wasn't doing any good for him anyway and he is no longer taking it.

At the time I had spoken to my vet about my questions of course, but I didn't think of all my questions until after hours for one thing, and also I wanted to hear from people who were actually using it. A vet's perspective is from a different angle than the pet owner. smile.gif
