Litter Box solution :D

Hi Everyone!

Okay so in brainstorming litter solutions on a budget. I hope it works for us, will keep everyone posted! Total cost is about $8 + litter

Supplies:

Ice pick - $1.99 cents ea @ walmart

3 rubbermaid 16 quart dish pans $1.96 ea @ walmart

SEE:PB160036.JPG

I only have 2 in the picture because i already had a third container I could use

Step # 1- Turn one dishpan upside down and put tons of holes in it with the ice pick like so:

Be careful, the friction from the icepick rubbing on the plastic and the pick will get very hot very quickly (might be a good idea to have some cool water to standby and dip it in occasionally.

The result: Lots of little holes in one of the buckets:

In conclusion:

The way it works is simple, supposedly.

You place the holey bucket inside the non-holey one and fill with litter

Scoop like normal as needed.

When it comes time to completely change the litter (we do it twice a week), then lift up only the top one and sift it.

Pour the clean litter into a third container, then replace the sifter container into the whole one, and repeat the process.

Will keep you guys posted!!

I think those dish pans are too small for an adult cat. However, I did do something similar with 2 18-gallon Sterilite totes, except I used a drill bit instead of an ice pick. I don't think it would work for sifting, though, or anyway it would take too long from those tiny holes.

I used to have a sifting litter set, but I think that I let the cats use the pan without the holes, then poured all the litter into the 2 stacked to use the sifting pan.

I was worried that when scratching they might catch a claw in the grate, plus any wet messes made the litter stick to the grate and then you'd need to wash it frequently, whereas pouring it into the other 2 pans at a later time, most of the wet was already clumped or dry already. But in the end it got to be really dusty and having to pour the dirty litter from the sifting tray into a bag got messy as we used smaller grocery bags so i just went back to the cat scoop.

Wow. sorry to be such a downer. Hope your system works for you! I love DIY projects.
