Older kitten "plays" with the new kitten

So I've got a 7 month old male kitten that has been living with me for 2 months. I'm a first time cat owner and was surprised at how much joy they can give. Anyway, I got another kitten (female) 3 days ago, currently she's 2 and a half weeks old. At first there was some hissing on both parts. I kept them separated by keeping the small kitten in a fairly large cage. But she was constantly crying so after one day, I let her roam free. 2 days in, now they older kitten "attacks" the new kitten by pouncing on her. He chases her around, then she hides under refrigerators or stoves where he can't get her. He gets frustrated and he bites her when he does catch her. There's no blood shed, but the little one yelps and "screams" after a while. He lets her go and the chasing/hiding starts again. There are times when he relaxes and allows her to eat and drink in peace.

I was wondering if this is normal behavior or is my older cat really thinking of "killing his prey" and by prey, I mean the new kitten. Will this have a bad effect on the kitten's development?

I can't keep them in separate rooms because I live in a tiny condo. If I do let the tiny kitten in my room and shut out the bigger cat, he'll meow til I let him in.

Thank you!

2 and a half weeks old? Are you sure? Kittens that old are a bit wobbly when walking.

Anyway, the behavior of your older kitten is quite normal. Here's a picture of my Ichi at 2 and half months old with his little brother of about 3 weeks.

mine did this when I brought home a 6 week old kitten, he is probably just establishing alpha status, if there is no blood I wouldn't worry as you said he will stop if she yelps.

when the older cat goes into his 'predator' mode, he chases and bites the kitten repeatedly even if she screams. she does get away and hides for a while though. will this make the kitten grow up being scared all the time?
