We've had a rat in our kitchen ductwork all week last week.  His gnawing drove me insane--it was loud enough to awaken me in the middle of the night!

I didn't hear him yesterday, but he tends to make noise around 7PM, and we were out for the night. However, when I opened the pantry doors (under the stairs and near the soffit), this morning, I saw chewed wood shavings on the floor, and boxes knocked over--and then I looked up, and saw a large chewed hole in the wall! And I had just given the pantry a thorough, take-out-everything-and re-organize it cleaning a week ago, pre-Mr. Rat!

We have a heat pump, with both parts of the unit (a "package" unit) outside.  There's a very large air return vent in our dining room.  DH removed the vent cover, and saw that Mr. Rat had chewed the ducts to get inside.

We have 9, VERY lazy cats, that's all I'll say! Start earning your Friskies, guys!

Yeah, I know (I was joking), but they haven't even feigned interest when the LOUd (and it was loud) chewing was going on! LOL

It's weird they haven't reacted. Do they think you have a new pet? I hope your rat is a male, not a female looking for a nice place to have her litter. That's all you'd need.

It sounds like you have some very contented kitties in your home. :lol3:

Several years ago we had a rat family in our bedroom wall.
I could hear them gnawing on wood at night....
drove me nuts. :cringe:

Then, as quickly as they came, they were gone...
never came back.
I hope you are are as fortunate. :cross:

Your cats are enjoying the entertainment, I'm just sure!

I wouldn't be surprised that you find them all cuddled up together one morning - get your camera ready.

It's a very, very cute thought!! When Koopa was alive, she was the supreme mouser and since her babies were born, we've never had mice in the house since! Good luck with your rat problem!
