My kitten tigger has this bad habit of smacking his paws into the water bowl and/or flip the water bowl to get a lot of the water out on the floor, then hunching with both front paws and belly way down on the wet floor.

His front paws often makes the scratch (front and back) motion on the wet floor while he is drinking from the little water that is left in the bowl.

I have two water bowls for tigger and another cat. Both bowls gets spilled and/or fliped every day and it's getting very annoying. Why is he doing this? And how do I discourage him from doing this?!

First off don't get aggravated with him. He is really doing a normal thing. Next, go out and buy one of those huge ceremic chip bowls with the really low edges and use that for the water bowl, he won't flip it anymore.

Thanks Hissy. My other cat Tiki never does this. Could you elaborate on why cats do what Tigger does? I am curious to know what's behind all these interesting behavior...

Some cats just like to see water move, once the water moves, they usually drink right away. You can also buy a drinkwell fountain and I would bet that Tigger would stop playing with his water bowl, since his water will be moving all the time.

Kittens are in exploration mode 24/7... so imagine being on drugs ALL the time, that's a cat... now imagine being an infant on drugs ALL the time, that's a kitten.

Any questions?

I've seen weirder (and more destructive) kitten behavior, just be grateful yours is an easy solution
. The idea of getting a heavier and wider (harder to tip) bowl is the best one. My adult cat likes to dip his paws and lick the water from them (yes, he drinks straight from the faucet too). Go figure, some never grow up (or stop doing kitty drugs).

That doesn't sound too bad. Kuce cleans herself by sticking her paws into the water bowl and grooms then she proceeds to drink from the same bowl. We've tried different types of bowls but she does the same thing. *shrugs*.

Oscar loves to paw the side of his water bowl and make a little bit of it splash out onto the floor.

He has been known on occasion to pull glasses of water off the coffee table too, so we have a to keep a close eye on everything on the table. It is so funny to see a paw sticking out from under the coffee table though and start "searching" on the table.
