Do you have snow tires on your car yet?

DH finally got around to putting the snow tires on today, after me nagging him for two weeks. I wanted to go have them put on, but he wanted to do it himself, so I waited.

Fortunately the law around here was changed last year, and now they're required from November 1st to March 31st. It was always a real pain before they were prescribed by law, because this area is really hilly, and people would get stuck and block the roads for hours. The past two winters were very snowy, so the legislators finally wised up.

I don't have snow tires- I put sandbags in my trunk, though. I drive a Mustang, so in the snow, the rear-wheel drive can be a fun experience... eek.gif Thank heaven for the traction control system! It actually handles beautifully, compared to my old car. agree.gif

Snow tires! I didn't realize anyone still used those. Even though I live where there is a lot of snow, no one here I know has them. Modern tires and brakes are fine in the snow.

When I lived in Montana, you needed to put on tire chains when going over mountain passes in winter. That was a real hassle. I had a VW bug when I lived there, though. With the engine in the back, it had great traction. I went up and down mountain roads to ski several times a week with no problems.

Maybe snow tires are still used in the mountains?

We have all season truck tires. Continental - something or other laughing02.gif. So we keep the same tires on year round. I do remember years ago, my dad having to change out the tires to snow tires for the winter. But that was like forty years ago !!!!! wavey.gif

According to my nieces, we live in the mountains. I call them hills, because there's no comparison to the Alps or Rockies. laughing02.gif All-weather tires just don't cut it here, and you do have to have chains in the Alps.

4WD truck with all terrain tires, plus, I live in the desert.

When I lived in Utah, my truck had no issues with snow, though I suppose if it did, I could always load the bed up for weight.

I wish I had a need for them, I really want to move to snow country but alas I'm stuck down where snow is basically unheard of. I miss the snow.

We have such a steep drive (even though it's short) to get up into the RV park, we found the all year whatever-they-were things didn't work. Late last winter we purchased a new set of winter tires called Ice Guard - don't know who makes them - but they are AMAZING. They don't have spikes, they're not legal here - but they STOP on ice!

We had a tire problem in September, and rather than buy a new set, we just put on the winter tires early. agree.gif

I am not sure if we have such a thing here,I saw an advert the other day for a brand of winter tyres I have never seen them advertised before,I think people over here are beginning to realise that we need things like this because of the bad snow we had last year.I am dreading it,I will be working at my new job going to peoples houses as a carer and I have to drive everywhere,I haven't been driving that long and I am pooping itsweat.gifx

It is very flat in this part of Illinois. I lived in the Rockies for 9 years and I miss the mountains. So wonderful to just look up at the horizon and see a fantastic landscape any time, even if you don't leave town for weeks.

I had some studded snow tires when I first moved to Montana. They are legal there, but not in lots of places. But then they didn't use road salt there then, so you needed them even in town.

On my old house, I have to take down the screens (kitty proof ones) and put up storm windows each fall. That system is almost as obsolete as snow tires in most places.

yeah.gif  Same here. Living in south TX snow is a rarity. Early this year we got a tiny amount of "snow" in really it was itty bitty ice pellets but hey it works for me. I'll call it snow laughing02.gif

We just are used to driving with whatever tires are on the vehicles!   Driving in snow doesn't bother me-its usually the other drivers one has so watch out for.  One just drives slower and to conditions.

Of course I have gone in the ditch-once due to black ice and once to avoid hitting another truck who had lost control of his vehicle.

Sadly, there is no need for snow tires here.  Our vehicles have four wheel drive, however, that doesn't help on ice...the main problem here.  Ice tires would be nice.  laughing02.gif

DH put new tires on 2 weeks ago. I have an all wheel drive suv. I wouldn't be without winter tires.

Put the snow tires on today too! Even if you're just driving around the city, they make a huge difference. Would never go a Calgary winter without them ever again and I wish they'd make them mandatory here.

We  haven't bought snow tires since we lived in NY...and that was over 30 years ago.I have a front wheel drive car and I use radials.I just bought a set a few months ago...michelins.I don't seem to have a problem getting around at all with this car.Snow will be here before we know it...ugh!

We don't generally need them here.  We do get some icky snows; but nothing like when I lived in Upstate NY.  I think some of my family does still use snow tires there.  Especially if they have a fancier car with nice rims or something.

I HATE driving in the snow!  Or even soon after one where the roads still have icy spots and things.  I'll make DH drive me places!  He used to have to take me to work because I was really scared of driving in it; but especially through downtown where the roads are narrow and have no shoulder.  At least it's pretty flat here.  But I did nearly go off the road once last winter because blowing snow had re-covered the roads.  I couldn't tell in front of my house because we are surrounded by trees.  But just up the road I should have turned around but I was scared to do that too.

I wish I could hibernate till Spring!  At least this winter I have my Outback!

We also have all-season tired on both vehicles.

I miss studded tires - we always had them back when we lived in Pennsylvania (ages ago). They're illegal here, but the "slush and snow" tires are a lot better than the "winter" tires available, and even the latter are better on the steep, narrow, winding roads here than the all-season ones.

We use all-season tires, too. Probably should buy snow tires for Clarence, simply because he is not a good snow car. Once it starts snowing here, Rick takes me back and forth to work; he won't let me drive Clarence at all until the roads are clear again. Clarence is so light that he doesn't stop well on snowy roads. I think snow tires might help, but again, the Cruiser is fairly light. dontknow.gif

I can remember, though, with my older cars, putting snow tires on them, usually around the beginning of November.

Usually we use studs, but the tires that are on now are pretty much worthless for traction. The studs are totally worn off. So right now we're ordering some snow tires from the tire store. I think they'll probably be coming in next week. smile.gif

Don't need them down here in SW Florida!    And I sure don't miss them.

Actually, we did have snow flurries here in 1978 --- enough to coat tops of cars.

Schools opened up to let the kids out who had never seen snow.   It was quite an

experience and made headlines in the newspapers.

It hasn't snowed here since Jan 1999, when we had 6+ inches, so no... we do not need them.

We get the occasional snow here, but we don't have snow tires, here.  We have "mud" tires.

Of course, since it hasn't rained much lately, right now we have "dust tires."

We have some heavy duty monster tires on both vehicles plus they have 4WD so actual snow tires arent needed. If anything they need to make 'ice eater' tires for around here lol. I think last year the ice was worse than any actual snow we got. I can handle driving in snow, its the ice that makes things a billion times worse..that at the stupid idiots on the road who dont know how to drive in snow.
