Sneezing a lot

Thread Starter

Myri, my new cat has been sneezing a lot again.  I expected it when I first got her and the adoption agency gave me some meds that should have taken care of the typical URI, but it's been about a month and she's started sneezing again.  Are there any other possible causes of sneezing (allergies, etc?)  I took her to the vet once, but that was when it was still URI.

Rodney hasn't started showing any symptoms, so whatever's causing it isn't contagious.

When I brought Mia home from the shelter she was on antibiotics for a URI too. Everything, goopey eyes running nose and most of the sneezing went away after she finished it. Then the sneezing came back. I decided to wait and see what happens because sneezing can be a million differant things and as long as she didnt have the other symptoms(gooey eyes, runny nose) it wasnt a secondary infection. It went away after a few weeks. :)

There are many different strains of the Feline Upper Respiratory Viruses. Here are some websites for you to look at:http://pets.webmd.com/cats/guide/upper-respiratory-infection-cats, http://www.catsexclusive.com/handouts/upperrespiratory.pdf, and http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=613.

In general, it is a virus and it needs to run its course. However, many times a secondary infection takes hold in the cat and that needs antibiotic. When your cat sneezes, does the cat have clear fluid/mucus coming out? Or does it have a color, like yellow or brown? If the cat is excreting colored mucus, please take the cat to a veterinarian you trust. Since the colored mucus/fluid, is an indication that the cat has a secondary infection.

As for the other cat not catching the URI, be glad biggthumpup.gif. Since it is most likely a virus, it is most likely contagious. But, as links explain, there are many factors that contribute to cats getting a URI.

Hopefully its not another URI! Have you sttarted using heat or anything recently? Maybe it could just be dust being kicked up.

My Perkins will start to sneeze periodically for no apparent reason and even have runny eyes with it. Have you tried L-Lysine http://search.betterhealthinternational.com/search/Brand-NOW_Foods--keywords-l-lysine?gclid=CJ_46NbAsawCFY3JKgodynZOFw Buy the powder form. It is quite cheap and does help with these sneezing issues. You can start Myri on 500 mg. (1/4 tsp.) once daily for ten days then go to 250 mg. (1/8 tsp) for maintenance. My cat's all get L-Lysine maintenance dosage. It is not bitter and can easily be mixed in wet cat food. Hope Myri feels better soon vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif
