I got a Ragdoll kitten almost 2 months ago. About 4 weeks ago he was having loose stool that was yellowish. Sometimes it held its form, and sometimes it was a puddle of poo. I thought it was a change in his diet at first (he was switched from Diamond food to Iams after about 2 weeks of owning him) but he was only getting worse.

I took him to the vet already with stool samples and the doctor gave me Albon for coccidia. They called me the next day and said his stool was negative for parasites. His poop was getting harder and darker by the last couple days of the meds, but after it was done he went back to pooping puddles again. They are really smelly too. His food hasn't changed since. Maybe he had bacteria that grew resistant?

I've read some kittens have food sensitivities. Should I try the plain chicken and rice thing? I really don't want to go back to the vet because I paid them 140 dollars to find nothing and cure nothing, but I wanted to hear any advice/stories people had. I'll probably take him again next week if nothing happens...

Thank you!

You have to watch your cat for dehydration when they have diarrhea.  If you hold the scruff for a few seconds and then let go, the skin should quickly return to normal.  A tent would indicate dehydration.  Also check its gums to see if they are not white or yellow streaked.  Either of these problems indicates an immediate vet visit.

Some people have had luck using plain yogurt or giving pumpkin for fiber.

There are so many reasons why a cat may experience diarrhea such as diet, stress, viruses, bacteria that only a vet could answer to a cause.  Maybe you should consider a second opinion with another vet.

You might want to have him tested for tritrichomonas foetus.  That will cause persistent diarrhea and doesn't show up on a regular fecal test.

What are you currently feeding him?

katachtig, thank you for the advice. He does not seem to be dehydrated but I have been feeding him wet food daily just in case.

stephanietx, your prognosis seems to be spot on. I read more about tritrichomonas foetus and it fits perfectly- apparently this parasite is common in purebred cats and lists the same signs that he has been showing, including the really bad smell. I will soon put him on a diet of plain chicken and rice with pumpkin as recommended by the treatment. Thank you so much for your help.

If it helps, my cat had problems with his poo for months.  Part of it was a sensitivity to corn, then a sensitivity to the food I had changed him to.  I ended up mixing a spoonful of white rice in with his canned food at every meal for about 2 week, and it helped to calm down his digestive tract until it finally stabilized.

Knowing this, I will likely have to do so again when he gets switched to adult food.
